Yorkshire Team bronze for Ruby & Helen

Last weekend, on 7th March, two of our senior athletes represented Yorkshire at the CAU Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The event is arguably the most competitive cross country event of the season, with all athletes having to qualify for entry through their County Championships.

Ruby Sykes and Helen Haigh earned their places in the team having finished 3rd and 10th respectively in the Yorkshire XC Championships back in January. It was Ruby’s third senior vest for Cross Country and Helen’s eleventh.

The conditions were good, with surprisingly few muddy sections after the wet weather, and the undulating 8km course suited the Yorkshire team. Jemima Elgood was out front and first home in the blue and white vest finishing 9th in the 280-strong field, with the remaining five team counters packing really well to finish between 53rd (Ruby) and 68th (Helen), giving Yorkshire bronze medals behind Surrey and Northern Ireland.

Well done to both Holmfirth athletes, and thanks must go to the team at Yorkshire Athletics Association for all their hard work.
