Holmfirth Harriers managed to retain their place in Division 1 of the West Yorkshire Track & Field League with a great effort from a number of our junior and senior athletes.
This year the league has comprised of 6 Athletic Meetings from 5th May through to 12th September 2021, all at the Princess Mary Athletics Stadium in Cleckheaton. At each meeting athletes aged under 17 can compete in up to 3 track or field events, while older athletes are free to compete in as many events as they wish. Athletes are awarded 7 points for a win in any event, 5 points for a 2nd place, down to 1 point for 6th place. Athletes compete in U11, U13, U15, U17, U20, and Senior age groups, so younger athletes can be competing against youngsters a year ahead of them at school.
We do not have as many athletes competing as some of the other clubs, and our position in Division 1 seemed under threat following the earlier meetings. However with points coming from across the age groups we managed a total of 228 points, keeping ahead of Valley Striders in the relegation position on 183 points and not far behind Longwood Harriers on 243 points. Congratulations to Soraya Thomas (U11 Girls) who came in for the last four meetings and took 19 points, to William Lander (Senior Men) who took 52 points from a consistent first or second place in 100m, 200m & 400m across the meetings, and to Daniel Jones (U15 Boys) who took 63 points across the meetings from sprints, middle distance, high jump and long jump to come first overall in the U15 boys.
