Homfirth Harriers ‘Fun in Athletics’ summer schemes were again a great success.
The athletics summer camps, organised by John McFadzean, celebrated their 20th anniversary this year and proved to be as popular as ever.
The first three day Fun in Athletics scheme was held on the first three days of the schools summer break with a total of 62 youngsters attending.
The second, held over the last three days of the holiday,s had a total of 54 children attend and the feedback from both sessions was very favourable with some youngsters already attending the Tuesday and Thursday sessions and others going to attend the Saturday Morning Club.
Although the emphasis is on enjoyment all the youngsters received instruction in all the throws, jumps, speed and endurance events before later being timed and measured as they aimed for a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal.
A number of the youngsters who had only booked for one or two days enjoyed it so much that they ended up attending on all three days and some brought friends and siblings along.
Both camps programme had to be fluid due to the English summer weather, but thanks to Russ Kaye on the first one, with Richard Szostak and Scott Gibbs who really enjoyed his first experience of coaching at the camps on the second both ran smoothly with all the children having an enjoyable time.
A special thanks to the Juniors Harriers: Jess, Chloe, Sophie, Shauna, Sam and Joey who all had attended the camps as athletes in the past and now gave up their time to help and make the events a success.
All of them were exceptional in the way they related to the young children, showed empathy and were very enthusiastic which rubbed off on the participants.
Each child received a medal and T Shirt at the end of the course.
There are two further courses planned at Autumn half-term and Xmas.
Autumn half term Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd of November
Xmas holidays Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th of January.
Plus the Saturday morning athletics for 6 to 12 yr olds club re-starts on Saturday 9th of September through to Saturday 16th of December.
The photographs show the young athletes receiving instruction and taking part in all types of athletic events plus having fun with seated volleyball and trolley racing.
Also the six junior harries who helped out at the camps.
