Road Update – February 2023

Road Championships

The road year has started well with some great results already.  The first road championship race, the Run Heaton 10k was well attended with Nine Harriers making it across the Pennines with some success.

Julia Thomas was first female overall (and therefore first lady Harrier too). Jack Sunderland was 4th overall and first male Harrier.  John Levick and Kevin Dessoy came 1st and 2nd M55 respectively and Anthony Waring and Bob Dickinson 1st and 2nd M50.  Noreen Edery was first F70.  Also running were Gary Putnam and Keren Pearson who are relatively new Harriers and Keren achieved a 10k PB.

A good morning’s work.

Unfortunately the Alderley Edge bypass 5m and 10m were cancelled.  These were the February races and I haven’t been able to find alternatives for the distance.  I’ve therefore decided to reduce the championships to six races from a choice of 12 rather than seven races from 14, with three short and three long to count.

The races are on the website.

Joe Percy 10k

After a three year break, the popular 10k road team event is back for 2023.  This gives Harriers a chance to shine against the other clubs in the district and will be held on Wednesday 14th June starting at 7:15pm from Storthes Hall just a few miles from Nieley.  The race is open to anyone in the club with the fastest 10 men to qualify for team A, then next 10 for team B etc. Ladies teams work the same.  This is run over very familiar roads for us.

We have always managed to get teams for both ladies and mens events and I hope that you’ll add this to your diaries.  Full details are on the website.

The organisers have also asked clubs to provide a couple of volunteers so if you’d like to help you can sign up on the website.

Club 6, 5 and 10

The dates for these three key races in the road calendar have now been confirmed.  They are:

Club 6 – 25th March.  This is being held on a Saturday morning this year with registration at 9:15 at the club.

Club 5 – 23rd May.  This is on the regular Tuesday club night.

Club 10 – 11th July.  Again this is on the regular Tuesday club night.

For more details and to sign up, please click on the links above.  I will also be looking for marshals for these races – if you can help please let me know or sign up on the website.

Monthly 5k Championship

Finally, the summer monthly 5k championship will be back this year.  This is the handicapped race around Magdale and will take place on the first Tuesday of each month from April to September (although April’s is the 2nd Tuesday – 11th).

You will be able to sign up on the website and on the board in the club.

See you all at the club

Kevin
