Junior Winter Virtual Championship 2021

The Junior Winter Virtual Championship series is now complete and the table of results has been made available on the website.

The Club has proudly rewarded the impressive achievement of our junior athletes during what has been an extraordinary winter.

A number of challenges were put in place throughout the virtual series to help motivate our athletes to do their best. These included:

  • A minimum of 10 virtual races over 12 weeks
  • Results that would give a monthly mean average of speed
  • Calculation of improvement and speed
  • A Handicapped Race to complete the series.

Our junior athletes took to the challenge with great optimism and resilience, and as such have been an inspiration to the Club. Special thanks goes to Florence Jones for her interim reporting of the series that gave us a personalized account of this Event for juniors.

I would like to thank the Management Committee for their support given to run the series and in particular, the following Committee members:

Rob Kersey as President

Mike Hall and Jon Burdon for presenting/publishing information

John McFadzean for his advice/support throughout and for junior course familiarisation

John Levick for taking responsibility as Junior Team Manager

Roger Bradley for course mapping and marking and remaining remarkably calm.

John Buckingham for recording the order of Finish

Tim Cock for course marking and presentation of medals

Phil Senior for organising the purchase of medals and engravings

And to Ashley Smith for the provision of Race Numbers.

Special thanks goes to Katie Walshaw, who despite a rather rigorous training schedule, took responsibility for the Junior 5k Handicapped Race acting as route planner, course familiarisation supervisor, and Hare/Sweeper. I know Ladies are good at multitasking, but that takes some doing.

And, of course, the parents of our Juniors, who gave incredible support and commitment to our athletes ensuring their success and safety, throughout the series.

Finally, the Club would like to thank Alan and Lucy Lane for permitting us to use Cliff Wood for the Handicapped Race.

So many have pulled together and that’s what makes Holmfirth Harriers AC such a special and important part of our community. Hopefully, we are through the worst of the Covid 19 Pandemic and I know that I will always remember this Winter’s Championship, with enormous affection for that determination to remain fit, active, and energised by life.

Well done everyone. Together we are stronger.
