Matthew Rose remembers a key lesson from Alwyn when competing in this exposed coastal half. Here is his report.
The Nova Coast Half Marathon in Prestatyn, North Wales certainly lived up to its reputation for coastal conditions! The first half was dominated by a relentless headwind that made every mile feel like hard work. Rather than trying to fight it alone, I had one thing on my mind – advice from Alwyn about not being exposed and being part of a group. Every time someone came past, I’d latch on for a while, making the most of whatever protection I could get. My focus became simply bridging the gap to the next group ahead and trying not to get caught out in the wind on my own. It was tough going and definitely a race of patience rather than chasing the watch.
Reaching the first turn was an odd feeling. The wind disappeared almost instantly and, instead, it suddenly felt warm and still. After battling the headwind for so long, I wasn’t quite sure which I preferred!
The second half, though, was where the race really came alive. Having kept things under control into the wind, I started to feel stronger and could see runners ahead who had perhaps worked a little too hard in the opening miles. One by one I began to reel them in, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about catching and passing people with purpose when you’re still feeling strong. It made all that patience in the first half worthwhile.
Not really what I wanted but given the conditions, I was pleased to finish in 1:40:13, placing 60th overall, 57th male, and 3rd in the MV50 category. Looking back at the splits, the race became progressively quicker as it went on, so while I just missed breaking 1:40, I’m really pleased with how I managed the conditions and finished feeling strong.
A tough but brilliantly organised event, with fantastic support throughout. Definitely one I’d recommend (if flat is your thing). It was one that reminded me that sometimes racing smart is every bit as important as racing fast.
