Meet Your Captains

I’m Damian McQueen the new Club Men’s Captain appointed in November 2021.

I initially started running for Holmfirth Harriers in the 90’s and enjoyed taking part in Road, Fell and Cross Country races. Following the completion of my 1st marathon my focus unfortunately went onto others things in my life and I drifted away from running. During my running time I was encouraged to join in with several club events where I was asked “whatever I did just finish and enjoy” I did exactly that and to my surprise at several Cross Country races I brought home the team trophy for 1stplace, even though I was just about last in each of these events.

Just over 15 years later I re-joined HHAC after a request from a close family member to start taking care of myself and improve my health. Since re-joining, where I started in the beginner’s group, I have been successfully pushed through some of the running groups in the club and tried Track, Road, Cross Country and Triathlon events.

My Goals as Men’s Captain

  1. See everyone have fun and enjoy being a part of HHAC as much as I do
  2. Encourage more team participants at the key club events (Road, Cross Country, Athletics and Fell), they are fun events, regardless of your current level of ability
  3. Help everyone improve to where they would like to within running / athletics

The races we focus on as a club are listed under each ‘Section’ and on the race calendar.

If you’re still unsure about racing, you can get involved and help at our club promotions. It’s a good way to meet other members and to put something back into the club.

If you’d like to know more about any events we participate in, please email (djmcqueen@mail.com), call me or come and chat to Mark or me at Neiley on a training night.

I enjoy hearing from our members, whatever your age, or standard.

I’m Helen Haigh, Ladies Captain and I’m always keen to hear from our female members, whatever your age, or standard

We have a very active and successful Ladies team, having won the West Yorkshire Cross Country League title for many years, silver and bronze medals at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships and a highlight of gold at the 2014 Northern Cross Country Championships when we had the individual winner.

We’ve had huge individual success on the roads, Fell, Track & Field leagues, Cross Country and Triathlon too, with many of our athletes achieving PBs, County medals and County and even England and  GB representation.

I’m keen to encourage everyone to join in our team events. They provide fun days out, are a great way to meet those that you may not normally train with and the friendly welcome and  support you’ll get from other team members is fantastic.  Whatever your standard and whatever discipline(s) you enjoy, I’d like to hear from you! If you’re new to racing, Road and Cross Country relays and Vets races are a good place to start, and they really are for everyone.

Most of the races we’re focussing on as a club are listed under each ‘Section’ and on the race calendar.
