A free one-day navigation course for Holmfirth Harriers members covering map, compass and practical navigation skills. Suitable for beginners or anyone wanting more confidence in the hills.

The course follows many of the areas covered within Mountain Training Association Hill & Mountain Skills content, including:

• Map features and setting the map
• Grid references
• Contours and reading landscape features
• Route planning and route legs
• Tick points and handrails
• Distance estimation (timing and pacing)
• Catch points and stop points
• Compass types and use
• Taking bearings
• Walking/running on bearings
• Navigation in poor visibility
• Attack points
• Aiming off
• Relocation techniques
• Navigation technology overview

Required:
• Packed lunch and drink (kitchen available for brews)
• Pen or pencil
• Clothing suitable for short outdoor activities/jogging (including wet weather)
• Sit mat if preferred
If possible:
• Silva-type compass (limited spares available)
• Mobile phone
• OS Explorer Map 288 – Bradford & Huddersfield (limited spare maps available)
