Race date: 10th August 2023
On a warm and dry evening, with perfect conditions underfoot, we had a field of 72 runners.
Rob James, of Royton Road Runners, repeated his 2018 win with a good time of 30.00 minutes. Holmfirth’s Richard Anderson pushed him hard on the first lap, but Rob pulled away on the second to win by a convincing 53 seconds.
Katie Walshaw, the female course record holder, ran very well for fourth place overall. Katie, along with Ruby Sykes and Helena Croft claimed the First Ladies team for Holmfirth.
Holmfirth also bagged the men’s team, Richard Anderson, Tim Brook and u/21 Sam Williams being the recipients of some refreshing beer.
Time Brook also picked up the cup for first Holmfirth vet.
Denis Stitt’s nephew, Ross Stevenson, came over from Ireland to run, and presumably visit his relatives.
He claimed he enjoyed the race, and as he was one of the very few to have a smile on his face at the the top of the climb I presume he did. We hope to see him again next year.
We try to have useful items for prizes, and 2nd lady Ruby Sykes picked up the star prize of a giant pack of toilet rolls. I get a couple of requests every year asking if they will be a prize. Is there a shortage?
The broom didn’t go this year. I got a very unwelcome suggestion as to where I could stick it when I suggested to someone they might like that as a prize. It will be available next year.
Thank you to everyone who turned up to run. We are a small race, but try to create a good atmosphere.
Thanks to all the marshals, timekeepers etc. without whom…..
Also to Cartworth Moor cricket club for their hospitality, excellent chilli, and beer.
I hope to see you all again next year.
