Christmas Athletics 2022 – Report

Holmfirth Harriers hosted a 3 day athletics camp at Neiley Pavilion during the first week of the Xmas School Holidays.

Although there had been a number of late withdrawals due to illness a total of 25 young athletes took part and had a very enjoyable time.

The coaches on the first day had to adapt very quickly to the changing conditions as the sudden temperature rise from below freezing to double figures caused extreme condensation in the sports hall which made the floor extremely slippery and unsafe to run on so the day was dedicated to events that required no running with the focus being on co-ordination and throwing.

As the hall dried out for days two and three we were able to revert to a full program of running, jumping and throwing.

Each athlete received coaching and instruction in every event before being timed and measured.

The youngsters were divided into three groups with older athletes from Harriers who volunteered to assist at the camp being assigned to each team.

All the athletes’ results were computed and they received a gold, silver or bronze medal dependant on what they had achieved with allowance for age.

Each athlete also received a Xmas chocolate selection box.

A big thanks to the 7 young teenage members of the club who gave up there time to help and to Russ Kaye, Eve Dutton and Lydia Throssell for helping with the coaching.

Below are photographs of the athletes taking part in events and a photograph of some of the children and the helpers.
