Holmfirth Juniors head to the North East

On Saturday 17 th July several Juniors from Holmfirth Harriers travelled to Sunderland to take part in the Hetton Lyons Junior Triathlon. This event took place at the Hetton Country Park, a superb venue for triathlon. The attraction of the event for the juniors was the opportunity to swim in open water; this challenge coupled with a long run section made it a real test of endurance.

In the Tristar 2 girls race Lucy and Erica Byram competed in a large mixed field of both boys and girls. Both girls raced extremely well, coming through the field during the bike and run section. On the final lap of the run Lucy managed to up her pace and with a final sprint for the line just took third place with Erica coming through very strongly for 5 th.

Holmfirth were represented in the older Tristar 3 category by Lewis Byram, Lucy Farquhar and Sophie Williams. The course as with the younger age group was a real test of endurance, the swim and run considerably longer than other junior events. Lucy was first girl out of the swim, gained more time on the next competitor Bronwen Owen on the bike section and ran really strongly to finish in 1 st place girl with a lead of 30 seconds. Lewis Byram was down on the leaders of the boys race after the swim, he worked hard on the bike section and with a blistering run section finished in 3 rd place, with the fastest Tristar 3 run time. Sophie in her first experience of open water swimming found the swim section hard but battled through and finished strongly on the run 5 th girl overall.

Wonderful Results for Juniors at Wakefield

Can't see the images above?. See them on Flickr here.

With the Holmfirth Harriers Junior Triathlon only two weeks away junior Triathletes from Holmfirth tested themselves at the weekend at the Wakefield event and achieved some stunning results. With wins for Holmfirth athletes in 4 of the age groups and many other medal winners besides the club maintained it’s excellent record and reputation for junior triathlon in Yorkshire. Triathlon is a hard sport to master, with an awful lot to remember as you race from one discipline to the next and on Sunday there were excellent performances from all of our juniors especially some who have only taken up the sport this year and for whom Sunday was the first triathlon in which they had competed.

Thomas Ford, who competed in the youngest age group – Tristart for 7 and 8 year olds had a great race in only his 2 nd triathlon. Amy Kettlewell finished in 5 th spot in Tristar 1 girls – 9 and 10 year olds in her 1 st ever triathlon and Daniel Howatson and, Jack Ford, like Amy Tristar 1s completed the race, 1 st race for Daniel and the 2 nd triathlon for Jack. In the Tristar 2 age group for 11 and 12 year olds Joseph Dendle completed the race, his 2 nd triathlon. We look forward to these and other Holmfirth athletes competing on home turf next weekend in the Holmfirth Triathlon.

The competition was as usual hot at the sharp end of all age group races, Wakefield Triathlon was the 5 th race in this year’s Yorkshire and Humberside series and points gained in this race were crucial to the final standings. Holmfirth’s athletes achieved some great results across the age groups

In Tri star 1 girls Sunnivah Waterman achieved a clear victory. In the boys race Tiras Waterman finished 2 nd and Nicky Farquhar 3 rd , Tiras only missing out on 1 st place by 2 seconds in spite of having swam 2 extra lengths in the pool! The tri star 2 race was also hard fought Lucy Byram finishing 2 nd and sister Erica 4 th this time. In the boys race Ben Dickinson finished an excellent 4 th.

Harmonie Waterman once again looked totally imperious in the Tristar 3 girls race, first out the pool by some margin, Harmonie went on to post both the fastest bike and run times and demonstrated once again why she was last year’s British Champion. Lucy Farquhar on the back foot after the swim – after having swum 2 extra lengths- managed to regain ground lost on the rest of the field and finished in 2 nd place behind Harmonie. Lewis Byram once again dominated the Tri-star 3 boys age group – coming from behind after the swim but posting the fasted bike and run times of the day also managed a comfortable victory. In the Youth girls race – completed at the hottest time of the day – Emily Harris finished 1 st.

In total 23 junior athletes from Holmfirth competed on Sunday across the age groups – full results will be available as soon as they have been published by Wakefield Junior Triathlon Club. Many thanks to all you juniors for taking part and competing so hard. The club is very proud of you.

The Leeds Aquathlon, the third events in this year’s Yorkshire and Humberside Junior Triathlon series and took place on Sunday 9 th May at Leeds Grammar School. The popular oversubscribed events attracts junior triathletes from the whole of Yorkshire and provides tough competition in most age groups. Holmfirth provided winners in 4 of the age-group categories and 4 further medallists. The Waterman family took home 3 gold medals, Tiras Waterman winner in the Tri-Star 1 boys (9& 10 year olds), Seth winner in Tri-Star 2 boys (11 & 12 year olds) and Harmonie in Tri-star 3 girls (13 & 14 year olds). Lewis Byram finished winner of the Tri-Star 3 boys rounding off the Holmfirth gold medallists. Other Harriers on the podium were Amy Kettlewell second in the Tri-Star 1 girls , this Amy’s first ever multi-discipline race, Lucy Farquhar second in Tri-Star 3 girls, Nicky Farquhar 3 rd Tri-Star 1 boy and Rebecca Addy 3 rd Youth girl (15 & 16 year olds).

Welcome to the Triathlon section of Holmfirth Harriers.  This section started in 2005 and has steadily grown in size since.

2009 is currently our best year for both our Junior and Senior Triathletes, winning many of our individual Age Groups at races throughout the Region.

It is down to the hard work of Holmfirth Harriers and our coaches that have got us into this strong position and we hope to use this as a springboard for future success.

Triathlon is one of the countries fastest growing sports and we are committed to ensuring that there is a warm welcome for new athletes of all ages and abilities (it really doesn’t matter if you can’t swim as many of our new starters couldn’t either when they started – me included/especially).

I hope that you find this page useful, and hope to add more throughout the season, until then, I hope you all enjoy your racing and achieve your goals.

What is triathlon

So what is a TRIATHLON? –tri meaning three is a good clue. There are 3 disciplines in triathlon SWIMMING, CYCLING AND RUNNING all done following each other with no gaps only TRANSITION – the fourth discipline. Transition is where you leave your swimming cap, goggles and wet suit (if it has been an open water swim) and where you get your bike, helmet, sunglasses, cycling shoes and number plus whatever else you need i.e. socks,t shirt etc and off you go on your cycling bit then back to transition to leave your bike, helmet, cycling shoes etc and put on your running shoes ready for the last bit – the run!! That's it in a nutshell – but there is really so much more. It really is GREAT FUN!!

Want to know more? Contact any of the coaches and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. Or you can email our Triathlon Coordinator Andrew Kerry. Also check out our latest newsletter for more info on what we have been up to. There are many races over the year for all abilities and ages. The triathlon family is very friendly and you will be made welcome at all events.

How do I become a Holmfirth Harriers Triathlon member? That’s simple, already a member of Holmfirth Harriers? Then you are automatically a member of HH Triathlon! Or to join Holmfirth Harriers please visit the home page and click on New Members to find more details on how to join and fees.

How do I train to become a triathlete? At Holmfirth Harriers we meet on a Tuesday and Thursday for running training. Depending on your ability there is a group you can run with and help you improve. Out of season many of our triathletes are very active with their running and take part in Cross Country and Fell races. These are open to juniors and adults and is fantastic training. Swimming at the moment is at Holmfirth Pool on various days. Over the summer we hold run/bike training and over the winter indoor turbo training. See the table below for all our up to date training times.
