Rachael - Triathlon Coordinator Hi and welcome to the Triathlon Section of the Holmfirth Harriers web site. We are really glad you have come to look at our site and the related links – we hope it means you have some interest in Triathlon.
Our section was started in 2005 by a couple of us who are either triathletes or parents or both. I myself am both. My name is Rachael Mellor I am a keen age – group triathlete competing in the female age group 40 – 44. I have represented Great Britain in my age both at the World Championships and the European Championships. I am a Level 2 Triathlon Coach. I am a swimming teacher and swimming coach to triathlete swimmers and a UK athletics coach for the Harriers. I have 4 children 2 whom compete in triathlons in the different age groups for children. Our section is mainly children and therefore most of the information will be geared to the children's events and organisation.
So what is a TRIATHLON – tri meaning three is a good clue. There are 3 disciplines in triathlon (some would say four – I'll explain later) SWIMMING, CYCLING AND RUNNING all done following each other with no gaps only TRANSITION – the fourth discipline. Transition is where you leave your swimming cap, goggles and wet suit (if it has been an open water swim) and where you get your bike, helmet, sunglasses, cycling shoes and number plus whatever else you need i.e. socks, t. shirt etc and off you go on your cycling bit then back to transition to leave your bike, helmet, cycling shoes etc and put on your running shoes ready for the last bit – the run!! That's it in a nut shell – but there is really so much more. It really is GREAT FUN!!
Children can compete in triathlon in the year in which they are 8 years old. The ages of all children and adults are taken for the season as Age as at 31st December. So although you may be 9 now, if you are 10 in October you would compete as a 10 year old. There are 5 children's age catagories and boys and girls do not compete against each other although they may sometimes appear to do.
Children who are 8 by December are called TRISTARTS;
Children who are 9 & 10 are called TRISTAR 1'S
Children who are 11 & 12 are called TRISTAR 2'S
Children who are 13 & 14 are called TRISTAR 3'S
Children who are 15 & 16 are called YOUTHS.
See the table below for the distances the children will compete in for their relevant ages. It is British Triathlon rules that children must not do more than these distances.

Many of the children's events are run on grass or on tarmac within a closed area. Children are not allowed to cycle on the roads unless they are closed.
A standard event for adults is called the Olympic distance event. These distances are as follows:-
1500m swim – 40km bike – 10km run.
Sprint distance
750m swim – 20km bike – 5km run.
With many races these distances vary sometimes by a lot eg 400m swims are common in pools, or by a little ie the bike course may be 44km.
Of course we have Ironman distances and Half Ironman distances which are as follows:-
3.8k swim – 180km bike- 42.2km run
2.5km swim – 80km bike – 20km run
I would advise anyone thinking of doing 2 or more events this year to join British Triathlon . You get lots of info from them including the annual handbook which lists all the main events and clubs in the country, plus the monthly magazine Tri News, plus at each event you will not need to purchase a day licence to be insured because your annual membership includes insurance. The Yorkshire and Humberside region runs an annual competition so see who are the best in our area for each year. There are Junior and Senior series.
We are planning to buy some tri-suits this year so that when we represent the Harriers we really look the part! I would hope they will be black shorts with yellow tops (all one piece).
We are looking for parents/carers who may be interested in becoming a Referee at events. Look on the Yorks and Humber web site for more details of courses in Feb 2007 or see me at Harriers.
At present we run with the Harriers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I coach swimming for Kirklees Active Leisure at Holmfirth Pool on Monday and Wednesday teatimes. At present we have 40 swimmers (full classes).
This year I have decided to run a Duathlon at Neiley playing fields as part of the Junior series. We hope to run some Kirklees Active leisure Tri sessions during school holidays this year.
Sessions: Swim Mon 5pm and Weds 5.15pm at Holmfirth Pool, KAL prices. NOTE Holmfirth Pool closed just now, check with Rachael for sessions.

Sunday June 17 th
Holmfirth Harriers Duathlon
At Neilley Playing fields Honley
This year we have decided to hold a Duathlon to put a different event into the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Series. As an Athletics club with a Triathlon Section we are hoping to attract more of our Harriers to come along and have a go at something different and we found that holding an Aquathlon was not the best way of attracting runners to take part.
We have a limited entry of 100 competitors which will be spread throughout the various Tristar age groups including Tristart and Youths. The Duathlon will be run on a large playing field which is all grass as per British Triathlon rules for children’s events. The runs will be on the 300m track in the middle of the field and the cycle around the edges of the field. The area is flat but can be muddy if we do get a lot of rain in the days before the event – we will keep our fingers crossed. Distances will be per the entry form as stipulated by British Triathlon. The event will be run to British Triathlon rules and is sanctioned by them. BT members will have insurance through their membership so non-members will need to get a Day Licence to cover insurance hence the difference in price of the entry.
There will be medals and a goodie bag for all finishers as well as prizes for the first three in each age group plus we will endeavour once again to give prizes to the Best Local Athlete in each category (who does not win another prize).
We want the event to be a great family day out with lots of success and a lot of fun. We ask that all spectators support all competitors and do not give outside assistance to any competitor – as is stipulated in BT rules. There will be water stations on the bike and run as well as water at the end of the race.
All children MUST wear a helmet which meets British Standards (or equivalent) and is fastened properly throughout the bike section. Helmet will be checked when children go into transition as will breaks and general bike maintanance. Please ensure all bikes are of SAFE working order. The majority of children will wear the same shoes for cycling and running and the same clothes. We hope to get some racks for the bikes but if we are unable we will allocate an area for Transition for each age group.
Parking will be within the grounds AND around the surrounding area within short walking distance of the event. To keep the event as safe as possible for the children competitors limited parking will be available in the actual event site. Please follow the signs for parking when you arrive. Registration will open at 1pm with the first event at 2pm. We would hope to finish by 5pm and do the presentation and results as soon as possible – but please bear in mind this does take time. This year there are a limited number of events in our area and it is perhaps the hassle and stress put upon event organisers that is part of the reason why – so please be patient and realise that we are doing our best!
DIRECTIONS FROM:
Huddersfield - Leave Huddersfield and follow all signs to Holmfirth or Holme Valley. Distance from Huddersfield is approx. 4 miles and should take no longer than 10 – 15 minutes. When you come to a Somerfield Petrol Station and shop on your right take the left fork for Brockholes and New Mill ( Sheffield). After 30mt you will arrive at the field please follow the parking signs from here.
Leeds M1 – Leave the motorway at the Denby Dale turn off Junction 39 and follow the signs for Denby Dale. This is about a 15 – 20 minute journey. Once in Denby Dale continue on the road until you reach the BP Sovereign Garage at a crossroads. Go straight across at the Sovereign pub past the caravans and follow the road on and down the big hill into New Mill. At the junction you must turn right (pub on your right post office across the road) and follow the road through Brockholes (watch for cameras). Neilley playing fields are on your right after less than 5 mins. Following the parking signs from here.
Please contact me if you need any more help. The event is between Honley and Brockholes very near Honley High School (where we may get permission for parking) if you get lost. Lots of local people know where Holmfirth Harriers are based and it is not in Holmfirth but at this venue.
