John Taylor Foundation for Young Athletes

England team World Cup
Mountain Races

In March 2014 two of our Committee Members became Trustees of the John Taylor Foundation for Young Athletes, a charitable trust founded in 2002 in memory of the former Holmfirth Harriers member and international athlete who died of Cardiomyopathy at the age of 32. John joined Holmfirth Harriers aged 14 and was a member for thirteen years before moving to Bingley.

The objects of the foundation are:

  • To give financial assistance to young amateur athletes in the United Kingdom in financial need to allow them to pursue opportunities in amateur athletics; and

  • The promotion and preservation of good health by raising public awareness of the condition of Cardiomyopathy in athletics in the United Kingdom.

Helen Berry has taken on role as Chair of Trustees and Phil Hobbs as Treasurer. We also have representation on the Grant Advisory Committee with Chris Beadle, involved since the Foundation’s inception, and most recently Kath Farquhar. Roger Bradley has also served as a Trustee in the past, with Roger and Chris having been close friends of John for many years.

Some famous fell running names have benefitted from grants from the Foundation over the years including our very own Mark Buckingham and former member Natalie White. Also Alistair Brownlee, Adam Grice, Katie Ingram, Emma Clayton and Lily Partridge (current UK Inter Counties and English National XC Champion). The Foundation has ensured that numerous young athletes have been able to seize opportunities that otherwise might have been denied to them, by way supporting racing on the Continent or simply to facilitating the purchase of necessary kit.

We encourage applications from young athletes (under 25) who need financial help to further their athletics careers, whether that be in Triathlon, Track & Field, Orienteering or Road/Fell/ Cross Country running. Whilst we are bound by the Charities Commission rules to use the term ‘poverty’ which may be a little off-putting to some applicants, the purpose is to support those who may need some financial assistance, perhaps due to being in full-time education.

Further details about Grant conditions, how to apply and general information about the Foundation can be found via the link below;

Phil and I would be very happy to talk to anyone who’d like to know more about applying for a grant or making a donation.
