Star Track 2010 successful again

Holmfirth Harriers promoted a total of four Avia Star Track two day athletic events during the schools holidays and despite some monsoon weather they were again very well attended and the young athletes really enjoyed themselves. The four events at Scissett, Salendine Nook, Netherhall and Holney were attended by over 230 children, with each taking part in a wide range of track and field events which were timed and measured so that each youngster could receive a certificate to see how far up the Avia Track & Field ladder they had progressed. In addition all the children received an athletics goodie bag supplied by Avia which contained sports kit.

The four events were organised by John McFadzean and he would like to thank the schools, and Neighbourhood Policing teams for their support. Plus a further 20 coaches and young athletes attached to the club who ensured that the athletes received quality qualified coaching and had a leader with each group to help organise hen and get them to the next event on time. The weather in particular at Honley was dire and it is great credit to the coaches and helpers that more athletes turned up on the second day than the first and all had a great two days.

The photographs show some the of the youngsters with Richard Szostak trying the hammer throw and a group photo at the end of the Scissett event which shows how much the young athletes had enjoyed themselves and wearing some of kit they received in the goodie bags.

Fun in Athletics

Holmfirth Harriers promoted Fun in Athletics with West Yorkshire Police and Honley High School.
“This event which is now in its 19 year is aimed at junior school children and introducing them into athletics. It ran over four consecutive Fridays with the children receiving coaching in individual and team events.
The children received qualified coaching from members of Holmfirth Harriers coaching team over the first three weeks in a variety of events covering all athletic disciplines. On the final day they were divided into teams where they had to put what they had learnt into practice through a mini Olympic competition.

John McFadzean the Youth Development Officer at Holmfirth Harriers and Huddersfield South NPT Police Officer helped organise the events alongside Sergeant Nicola Brown who also assisted with the coaching.

This event again proved to be a great success. The children really enjoyed themselves, giving their all in every event which made it an enjoyable experience for all the coaches and helpers. The coaches were supported by a number of teenage athletes from Holmfirth Harriers and Honley High School who acted as team leaders, encouraging and organising the young children over the four weeks.
All the volunteers from the Police and Holmfirth Harriers gave up their own time and John would like to thank the coaches, parents and helpers, young and old for their assistance in again making this a great event.

The photograph shows most of the 40 young children, who were presented with certificates, Easter eggs and medals on the Olympics Night by Tom Cock one of the clubs elder statesman which shows that athletics crosses the ages.

This is one of the highlights of the year with so many youngsters giving their all and fully participating. Everyone gets caught up in the event and the noise of encouragement on the last night had to be heard to be believed.

2012 will be too soon, but the 2020 Olympics may see an athlete who started here representing Great Britain as some of the children are really talented and fast.

Juniors compete in the National Cross Country Championships

The English National Cross Country Championships, the premier event in the Cross country calendar, took place at Roundhay Park in Leeds on Saturday. Amongst the 5000 runners who competed was a good turnout of Junior athletes from Holmfirth, many of whom competing for the first time in a Championship. With over 400 runners in each of the junior age group races the standard of competition was really high with the best runners in the country competing for both team and individual honours. Lewis Byram, in the U13 boys race was the top Holmfirth athlete of the day. Lewis, not overawed by the competition, many of the boys in the race a year his senior, ran a perfectly paced race and came through to finish in 20th position. In the U17 men race, Max Kaye and Thomas Travis-Pollard, also both with another year in the age group, ran well coping well with the extremely fast pace of the race and the legendary hills of Roundhay Park. Max finished in 34th position and Thomas in 39th. Ruby Sykes, another athlete at the bottom of her age group had a good run to finish 129th U15 girl. In the U15 boys race Michael Booth finished 361 and Robert Hinchcliffe 365. In the U13 boys age group Lewis was joined by Aaron Arthur who finished 170th, Bradley Bedford 171, Eddie Hinchcliffe 281, Andrew Farquhar 299, and Joe Williams 361. The U13 team finished 22nd. Also completing a team were the U13 girls with Lucy Farquhar in 182nd, Olivia Sykes 214, Sophie Spencer 278, Megan Lamb 325 and Sophie Williams 413. The Juniors had a great day out wallowing in the Roundhay mud and really appreciated the cheers from the hardy band of Holmfirth supporters, and also having the opportunity to share the event with the top junior and senior athletes from around the country.

U13s show the North what they are made of!!On Sunday 2 teams of Junior athletes took part in the North of England Young Athlete Relays held at Leeds Met University in Leeds. Both teams performed brilliantly against all the best clubs in the North. The U13 boys teams were off first with Aaron Kettlewell as lead off man. With 30 teams on the line the first 400m were a battle for position. Aaron ran strongly and held his own against boys up to 18months his senior. Aaron Arthur ran strongly, managed to close the gap on the teams ahead and brought the team through to 11th position running a time of 11.13 handing over to Lewis Byram. The chase was on and Lewis closed down on the teams ahead running strongly and brought the team home in 7th place, just a few seconds off 6th place and only 30 seconds off the bronze medal.
