Summer Programme:

The summer programme will commence on Tuesday 6th of May 2008 when all athletes will be placed into a group which will rotate round a full programme of events on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Neiley Playing Fields. This will give them an opportunity to learn / improve their skills in a full range of events covering Jumps, Throws, Speed and Endurance. In addition athletes will be able to join more advanced groups to push themselves to attain a higher standard. Full details will be updated when available.

Please note that on the 13th of May, and 26th of June due to club competitions the athletes will be encouraged to take part in the competition and their will be no groups on the field on those day. In addition Tri-Athlon training will take place for the bike, run and transition phases of that discipline, please check the Tri page for dates.

For further information contact John McFadzean, Richard Szostak or any of the coaches.

Winter Programme:

With winter training a reminder to ALL under 11's no matter which group you are with you require an adult to be with you.

The main groups for junior athletes are Pumas and Tigers who go out road running, or John Mac's Jaguars who have sessions based at Neilley, Honley High School or Steep Ridings dependant on the weather and aims of the session i.e. speed, hill, endurance or style.

If you are in John Mac's group adults do not have to run but can walk/ drive to where the session is taking place. Any adult wishing to take part in these sessions are more than welcome and you may be surprised how hard they are, as they are geared towards the individual. Any problems or questions please speak to John Mac or Richard Szostak.

If a junior athlete chooses to go with another group and go on road runs they MUST, (As must all adults) obey the instructions of the coach in charge and if they are junior school age they must have an adult who runs with them and takes responsibility for them.

ALL ATHLETES ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR REFLECTIVE BIBS WHEN THEY GO OUT ON THE ROAD.

All coaches have the right to refuse to take any athlete of any age with them if they feel the safety of that athlete or any other athlete will be put at risk.

The winter x-country season has started, the West Yorkshire league provides four good races for age groups from under 11 upwards, please sign up on the notice board, and these are ideal races to get involved with.

Richard Szostak will be starting his indoor sessions on Wednesdays starting 3rd of October 2007 look out for posters or speak to Richard for more details.

Look out for details of sports hall athletics competitions during the winter.

A reminder to all that subscription is now due, if you have not joined or renewed membership you will not be able to take part in these sessions.

Centenary Challenge 2008

Junior Harriers take to the boards at the E.I.S for the Centenary Challenge.

RESULTS here.

Sunday 6 th of April saw the Junior Athletes of Holmfirth Harriers travel to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield where the club had hired the international indoor track to celebrate their Centenary Year with the Centenary Challenge for the junior athletes.

The event had all the athletes running over 60m, 600m, putting the shot and taking part in the long jump, with the results being turned into points to decide the winners in each age group.

The young athletes were inspired by the surroundings and the heats of the 600m resulted in some fantastic battles up the home straight, on a couple of occasions the athletes were awarded the same time. The shot putt was held behind the curtains in the far corner of the arena but although not visible to all it was certainly audible as the youngsters gave out loud grunts that a seasoned international would have been proud of as they threw.

The effort of the youngsters inspired the adults who persuaded the organisers to let them have a go and 21 ran in a 1000m race, this received great cheers from the youngsters who even joined John McFadzean and Richard Szostak on their final lap as they brought up the rear.

The last event of the challenge was the 60m dash and it was great to see so many youngsters from the club straining to beat each other and the clock, but competing with a smile on their face. The adults not to be outdone then took part in a series of 60m sprints with John and Richard showing this was much more their distance.

The whole club then came together with 8 teams taking part in 12 x 200m and then 12 x 60m relays. The relays saw Nicky Farquhar 7yrs old lining up alongside Tim Cock who is nearly 10 times older but the noise, effort and enthusiasm of all showed that no matter the age you can still enjoy athletics.

The event was also to celebrate and remember the life of Val James a member who died last year, leaving a donation for the club and a small memento trophy will be presented to the winners of each age group.

The event was hailed as a great success with the young and not so young already looking forward to another similar event next winter. With almost 200, athletes, parents and club members travelling to the E.I.S it was certainly very worthwhile and it is hoped to make it a regular event on the clubs calendar.

Holmfirth Junior triumph in Middlesbrough .

Holmfirth Harriers A.C junior track and field team went one better than the seniors over the weekend by travelling to Middlesbrough for the Division one East match at the Claireville Stadium and returning home victorious.

The day did not start too well with some problems with navigation to the stadium meant that the team only arrived one minute before the first event.

The event had not been long underway before the team suffered a future setback when Kerry Addy suffered serious arm injury and had to be taken to hospital. This affected a number of the team but they all rallied round and gradually gained the upper hand in a close match which both Middlesbrough and Bingley had high hopes of winning. The spirit of the team was raised when she returned from hospital in time to watch the final few events including the steeple chase with next door neighbour James Kendrick receiving loud cheers every time he landed in the water jump on his way to 2 nd place.

The Girls team were particularly strong in numbers despite some of the more experienced athletes being absent and it was the strength in depth that carried the team through. A number of youngsters were making their debuts and a special mention to these, Emily Boulton, Sophie Armitage, Chloe Driscoll and Rob Heywood whose performances should encourage others to take part as they were able to more than hold against more experienced opponents.

The team came away from the meeting with two athletes of the match awards, one for Beth Petit in the girl's track where she produced a grade 2 performance running with her friend and training partner Amy McGivern both recording wins. The boys field award went to Junior George in the triple jump where he just edged out club mate Daniel Quashie as they to both won their events.

In the absence of the Kerrie the under 13 girls had to fill in for her with the Booth twins, Alannah and Georgia, causing confusion as one team complained that Holmfirth had one girl competing too many times until it was pointed out that there was two of them as they are identical. A special mention for Alannah and Shannon White who both agreed to run the 200m and gained what proved to be vital points at the end they were ably supported by Chloe and Megan Sunderland.

In the under 13 boys Max Kaye again dominated his events winning the Shot and 1500m with ease, in addition to the high jump, unfortunately due to late cry offs he was only supported by Declan McGivern and Tom Jones but they both recorded wins as well.

Oliver Scrimshaw, Katie Zietek, Junior George Sian Stead and Emma Szostak had all competed the day before but again turned out for the club producing a number of notable and winning performances none more so than Oliver in his 400m Hurdle debut, the first boy's track event which set the tone for the afternoon. This was mirrored by Blain Lindor who stepped up to and won the 400m for the first time. These were joined by Junior, Daniel, Rob, James and the throwers Ashley Thompson, Ashley Smith in winning a number of Under 17 events.

A similar tale in the Under 17 Girls where Emma, Sian and Katie were joined by Deon Hunt, Sophie Armitage, Jessica Sunderland, Emma Sheard and Emily Boulton as the Holmfirth girls gathered numerous points throughout the afternoon, Sian performing heroically in the longer events in particular when winning the 3000m

The Under 15 girls were again strong with Beth and Amy being joined by Laura Beardsell and Jordan Mullinger in dominating the longer events and Hannah Sunderland, Sophie Singleton, Athena Mellor and Jasmine Ellis performing well in the shorter track events and on the field.

The under 15 boys still need one or two more athletes but the ones who did take part, Mathew Spriggs, Edward Kendrick, Jordan Booth, Craig Sheard and Tom Stead acquitted themselves admirably collected a number of victories throughout the afternoon.

With over 40 athletes from the club taking part in 90+ events it is was truly a team performance which was assisted by the officials and parents who assisted Maxine, Lauren and John throughout the afternoon, in particular Steve Beardsell who delayed his return to complete the time keeping.

Norwich Union Star Track;

Holmfirth Harriers A.C organised and promoted the first of 4 Norwich Union Star Track Athletic schemes they are running this year at Scissett Middle School in the second week of the school holidays. This two day programme was attended by fifty four children who all received qualified coaching from members of the Holmfirth Harriers coaching staff, despite some very heavy showers the children agreed it had been great fun and worthwhile. The children all worked towards achieving different awards dependant on age and which were calculated from the results of the eight different events they took part in. All the children managed to achieve a high enough standard to earn an award, 12 of which were gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze.

At the end of the second day all the children received a goodie bag from Uk ; Athletics Star Track. The event was supported by the local Neighbourhood Policing Team from Kirkburton, Kirklees Active Leisure, West Yorkshire Sport and Scissett Middle School who allowed the use of their facilities.

The photo's show wet but happy children at the end of day two after they have had the presentation, and a group of bedraggled youngsters about to see how far they can run in five minutes.
