Northern Track and Field League Match 3

Saturday 7th May

Holmfirth Harriers were hosting the opening match of the Northern Track & Field League at Cleckheaton on Saturday. Currently in Division 2WC, the high level of competition from other big clubs made it vital that Holmfirth got off to a good start. Their rivals for 2016 are: Blackpool, Bolton, Seaton, Spenborough and Trafford and the Harriers responded magnificently to the task collecting 3 Club records and 18 new best performances in the process.

In the Sprint events Jordan Toth was in blistering form to win both the 100m and 200m ‘A’ races with times of 11.0 and 23.0secs respectively. His points moves him into 3rd place in the ‘Top Point Scorers Award’ for 2016. He was joined by Will Lander who won the ‘B’ 100m crossing the line in 11.5secs and by Craig Sheard in the 200m, out dipping the Spenborough athlete to take 3rd ‘B’ in 24.4secs. Will Lander crossed the line in 3rd in a tight 400m ‘A’ race with a time of 51.7secs and Kai Sunman also took 3rd with 55.8secs in the ‘B’ event.

Naomi Harvey-Franklin took on the responsibility of the ‘A’ 100m race equalling her PB of 13.4secs, whilst club stalwart Aideen Farrell crossed the line in 31.9secs in the ‘A’ 200m. Vicky Rhodes in her first outing in the senior team gave excellent support in the ‘B’ 100m and 200m races to record 15.4secs and 32secs respectively. In the 400m Ellie Sunman, making her debut in the senior team, was joined by Daisy Smith. Both putting in a gutsy performance and recording 69.6.8secs and 71.7secs respectively.

George Orton, an established member of the team set a new U20 Men and Senior Men’s record as he won the Long jump with a leap of 6.58m. He also won the Triple Jump setting a new PB with a distance of 12.59m He was joined in the long Jump by Seth Calvert-Green the youngest member of the team, who secured good points with his 5.15m jump and by Kai Sunman who took 2nd ‘B’ in the Triple Jump.

Georges third Victory and 3rd Club Record came in the 110m Hurdles, where he established a commanding lead and crossed the line in 16.8secs. His 27 points gives him a 5 point lead in the top Point Scorers award. Eddie Hinchliffe and Craig Sheard finished 3rd ‘A’ and 2nd ‘B’ in their respective 400m Hurdles races with Craig recording a new PB of 69.7secs. Craig’s efforts throughout the day in the more technical events takes him into 2nd place on the Top Point Scorer leader board.

In the 100m Hurdles events Naomi Harvey Franklin and Zoe Storr showed excellent technique over the hurdles to set a new PBs of 18.0secs and 20.8secs respectively. Naomi was joined in the 400m Hurdles by Aideen Farrell, finishing 2nd ‘A’ and 4th ‘B’ against strong competition.

There were also good performances in the Women’s Jumps events with Naomi Harvey-Franklin securing 3rd and 4th ‘A’ in the High Jump and Long Jump. Vicky Rhodes did a sterling job to finish 3rd ‘B’ in the high Jump with a 1.35m clearance. Aideen Farrell gained valuable team points in her performances in the Long Jump and Triple Jump whilst Ruby Sykes made it through to the additional jumps with an excellent 9.22m performance. Naomi had a very busy day amassing a total of 34 points on the day to make her Top Point Scorer.

The clubs distance athletes were in Sparkling form. In the 800m Kai Sunman showed a good turn of speed finishing 2nd ‘A’ with 2mins 01.1secs with Lavell Pierre giving valuable support by finishing 2nd ‘B’ in 2mins 04.2secs in the ‘B’ race. Dan Shaw had an excellent 2nd place run in the 3000m Steeplechase smashing his PB with a time of 11mins 35secs, whilst Craig Sheard gave valuable support with his 2nd place in the ‘B’ race. New Member, Niall O’Connell and Alex Robinson set PBs in the 1500m, crossing the line with identical times of 4 mins 27.3secs. Dave Watson and Dave Turnbull again had good runs in the 5000m finishing 2nd ‘A’ and 1st ‘B’ respectively.

The women’s distance athletes also had a good day. Ruby Sykes and Zoe Storr took on both the 800m and 1500m with both finishing 2nd in the 800m and 3rd in the 1500m. Ruby has made massive improvements already this season setting best times of 2mins 20.6secs and 5mins 03.1secs. Maggie Sykes and Helena Croft both had great runs in the 3000m to finish 3rd ‘A’ and 2nd ‘B’.

The club’s Top throws athlete Katie Zientek best performance came in the Javelin, winning the ‘A’ event with 27.96m. She was joined by Daisy Smith taking 2nd ‘B’ with 16.06m giving them a total of 14 points. They teamed up again in the Discus to put in some solid performances. Katie was joined in the Hammer by Ann Smith setting a season’s best of 14.67m and by Naomi Harvey-Franklin in the Shot. Katie is currently in 2nd place in the ‘Top Point’s Scorers’ Award with 21 points.

In the Men’s Throws Kit Burgoyne teamed up with Andy Storr for the Shot and Discus. Kit set a new PB of 9.10m in the shot, whilst Andy recorded a PB of 20.23m in the Discus. Club Stalwart John McFadzean gave strong support in the Hammer to finish 3rd ‘B’. In the Javelin, Eddie Hinchliffe and Craig Sheard threw 36.11m and 23.48m respectively gaining valuable points for the team.

In the relays at the end of the day’s competition Holmfirth was again able to field a team of sprint relay specialists. Seth Calvert-Green ran a good bend to hand over to Craig Sheard who ran a strong back straight. Will Lander kept them in the lead, then a faultless hand over to Jordan Toth enabled Jordan storm through to win in 45.9secs. In the Women’s 4 X 100m Holmfirth were 5th in 56.4secs. In the 4X400m the Men’s team of Will Lander, Lavell Pierre, Niall O’Connell and Kai Sunman flew round to finish a splendid 2nd. The Women’s team finished in 6th place to gain valuable points.

Hosting a Track & Field Match at this level is a tremendous responsibility and requires commitment from a specialist team in addition to the usual team of officials provided by the Club. After 37 events, Holmfirth were given 1st place with 374 points, just 7 ahead of Blackpool on 367 points. Bolton 3rd on 356 points, Seaton 4th on 323 points, Spenborough 5th on 301 points and Trafford 6th on 233 points.
