West Yorkshire Track and Field League 2014

In glorious sunshine (and a sometimes rather more than a light breeze) Sunday 3rd August saw the final fixture of the 2014 West Yorkshire Track and Field league.  Set up in 1968, pre synthetic tracks in Yorkshire, with the aim to introduce athletes to track and field events.  Whilst the league has come a long way facility wise since the original grass track venues which included Holmfirth High Schools playing field, it’s still a fantastic introduction to athletic events for all ages and 2014 saw both novice and seasoned track and field specialists compete.

Throughout the course of the league many exciting races were run, throws and jumps executed and many a pb was set and often improved as the season progressed.  There really were so many splendid performances and efforts by Holmfirth Harriers athletes it would be impossible to pick and choose and do justice to all.  Think back to the Commonwealth Games, now try to imagine yourself a part of that, not only as spectator but actually competing on the track or field.  All the athletes at Hampden Park started somewhere and if it wasn’t the West Yorkshire Track and Field League then it could well have been. That said the league really is for everybody to have a go and at £10 for 6 rounds each with multiple events on offer there really is nothing to stop you.

Competitors in the league are also eligible to enter the League Championships which take place on Saturday and Sunday the 6th and 7th September 2014 at Cleckheaton.

This year, in conjunction with the Championships, the Yorkshire Combined Events will also be held at Cleckheaton over the same weekend.  This event is open to all (whether you took part in the league this year or not), information and entry form here.  Note: entry deadline of 16th August.

Finally, for a flavour of this years’ league go to the WYT&FL website pages and to see the action from Sunday see Norman Berry’s’ photos in HHAC Flickr albums.WYdecamp
