Northern Track and Field League Match 3

Holmfirth Harriers were hosting the 3rd Northern Track & Field Match at Wakefield on Sunday. Currently in 3rd place, they would have to finish in the top two if they were to move up to 2nd place overall. The warm sunny conditions ensured a high competitive standard and the Harriers responded magnificently to the task.

            In the Sprint events Jordan Toth was in blistering form to win both the 100m and 200m ‘A’ races with times of 10.8 and 22.4secs respectively. His eighteen points moves him into equal 2nd place in the ‘Top Point Scorers Award’ for 2014. He was joined by Harvey Woodhead in the ‘B’100m crossing the line in 11.9secs and then in 24.1secs in the 200m later in the day. Kai Sunman and Lavell Pierre were up against 400m sprint specialists in the 400m. They rose to the challenge recording 53.7secs and 55,0secs respectively.

Lauren Storr, making her first appearance on the track in this seasons League matches ran well to finish 3rd in both the 100m (13.6secs) and 200m (28.1secs). She was joined in the 100m by Naomi Harvey-Franklin who ran a strong 100m in 13.6secs and by Louise Adams in the 200m. Louise was making her debut in the senior team running well to record 30.1secs. In the 400m club stalwart Ruby Sykes was joined by Katie Franklin. Both putting in a gutsy performance and recording 65.8secs and 67.4secs respectively.

           

            The club’s throws athletes Katie Franklin and Katie Zientek continue to dominate the top point-scorer board, taking maximum points in the Discus with their 25.25m and 23.48m efforts respectively. Franklin finished 3rd ‘A’ in the Shot, whilst Zientek was 2nd ‘B’, their positions being reversed in the Javelin with Zientek’s 27.98m a metre ahead of Franklin’s 26.87m. Adrienne Dewhirst teamed up with Katie Zientek in the Hammer setting a season’s best of 16.18m. Franklin is currently in equal first place in the ‘Top Point’s Scorers’ Award with 73 points with Zientek in 3rd on 72 points.

            In the Men’s Throws Dennis St Louis showed massive improvements recording PB’s in all his events. His best result came in the Shot where his 9.91m last effort moved him from 5th to 3rd ‘A’. In the Discus and Javelin he threw 27.17m and 30.06m respectively. Club Stalwart Andy Storr gave strong support, his best result being his 20.67m in the Hammer to finish 3rd ‘B’. In the Javelin, Dennis teamed up with Dave Watson who threw a season’s best of 28.34m gaining valuable points for the team.

           

In the 100m Hurdles events Lauren Storr and Naomi Harvey Franklin showed excellent technique over the hurdles to win the ‘A’ and ‘B’ races in times of 16.0secs and 18.2secs respectively, collecting maximum team points in the process. Naomi was joined in the 400m by Aideen Farrell finishing 3rd ‘A’ and 2nd ‘B’ against strong competition.

Rob Hinchliffe-Smith and Jake Richardson both finished 3rd in their respective 110m Hurdles races with Jake recording a new PB of 23.0secs In the 400m Hurdles they found themselves up against 400m specialists but still gained valuable team points with their efforts.

George Orton, one of the youngest members of the team secured improved performances in all his events. He set a new PB in the triple jump with a distance of 11,49m and a season’s best with his 5.45m in the long jump and 1.50m in the High Jump. He was joined by Robert Hinchliffe-Smith who also secured season’s bests in the High Jump and Triple Jump. Robert’s busy schedule of 5 events keeps him at the top of the leader board with 55 points.

            There were also improved performances in the Women’s events with Aideen Farrell and Lucy Taylor each finishing 2nd in their respective Triple Jump events with jumps of 9.31m and 9.14m, followed by 3rd places in the high jump. Earlier in the day Katie Franklin had secured 2nd place in the Pole Vault.

            The clubs distance athletes were in Sparkling form. Lavell Pierre showed a good turn of speed to take his personal best down to 2mins 01.2secs finishing 3rd ‘A’. Kai Sunman gave valuable support to record 2mins 09.2secs in the ‘B’ race. Richard Smith had an excellent run to dip under 10mins for the first time in the ‘A’ 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9mins 59.5secs, whilst Jake Richardson gave valuable support with his 4th place in the ‘B’ race. Richard was in action later in the day in the 1500m with Peter Brookes, finishing 3rd ‘A’ and 2nd ‘B’. The points gained puts him in joint 2nd in the Top Points Scorers Award. Dave Watson and Stuart Sharpe again had good runs in the 5000m finishing 2nd ‘A’ in 15mins 45.9secs and 1st ‘B’ in16mins 22.1secs respectively.           

            The women’s distance athletes also had a good day. Ruby Sykes and Zoe Storr took on the 800m, both finishing 3rd in their respective races. Maggie Sykes and Lucy Farquhar both had great runs in the 3000m to finish 2nd ‘A’ and 1st ‘B’. Olivia Sykes, following her efforts in the English Schools had a splendid run to win the 1500m gaining full points with a time of 4mins 45.5secs. Maggie gave good support to finish 3rd in the ‘B’ race.

            In the relays at the end of the day’s competition Holmfirth was again able to field a team of sprint relay specialists.  Harvey Woodhead flew out of the blocks and ran a good bend to hand over to Craig Sheard. Craig and Will Lander worked hard to maintain contact with the leaders so when Jordan Toth took the baton, he stormed through to win in 45.5secs. In the Women’s 4 X 100m Holmfirth were 4th in 55.2secs. In the 4X400m Both the Men’s and Women’s teams finished in 4th place to gain valuable points.

           

            Hosting a Track & Field Match at this level is a tremendous responsibility and requires commitment from a specialist team in addition to the usual team of officials provided by the Club. A huge thank you to Adrienne Dewhirst Meeting Organiser, Kevin Johns Chief Time Keeper, John McFadzean Field Referee, John Townsend and Craig Sheard Marksmen, Results team Jaqueline and Andy France, Announcer Tim Cock, First Aid Vicky Lawton Helen Petit and Lucy Farquhar, Track Judge Russ Kaye, Lap Times Alwyn Dewhirst, Field Officials Richard Szostak, Adrienne Dewhirst, Rowan Eastwood, Dan Shaw, Steve Beardsell, Jonny Sykes, Phil Senior car parking and assistant Groundsman.

            After 37 events, Holmfirth were given 2nd place with 376points, just 1 point behind winners Leigh on 377points. Leigh were confirmed in 1st place overall with 16 match points, Holmfirth Harriers are now in 2nd place with 14 points and Seaton 3rd (12 points).
