Mens Podium Lough Cutra Super Series 2017

Following a great race in Dublin last year where Lewis Byram finished 3rd he was hoping for a podium again. Lewis and Leeds training partner Sam O’Shea made the short hop across the Irish Sea to take part in the first race of the year in the Triathlon Ireland Super Series on Saturday 27th May. The best athletes in Ireland and further afield gather together to race the sprint distance of 750m open water swim, 20k bike and 5k run.

Athletes lined up at 8am in torrential rain and entered the lock over looked by the beautiful Lough Cutra Castle, Co Galway. A fast swim lead by German athlete Moritz Horn ensured the pack of 40 athletes were well spread coming out of the water. Lewis was 2nd out of the water behind the German into T1.

The bike was 3 laps on closed road was both technical with dead turns and challenging with the wet conditions making it tougher. By the end of the first lap Lewis together with Irish athlete Brian Glynn had caught the German athlete and all worked well together over the remaining 2 laps.

Together into T2 the trio had built a 50 second lead on the chasing pack of athletes.

All three went out on the run together but it was Lewis and Moritz Horn who broke away. Running side by side over the 5k course, consisting of road and grass paths. It came down to a sprint finish with Horn, the European Junior Duathlon Champion, just out sprinting Lewis to the line, with Lewis running 15:30 for the 5K in 2nd place. Both athletes getting under the hour Moritz 59:48 and Lewis 59:54. Brian Glynn took the final podium position in 1:1:20 with Sam finished a respectable 23rd place in 1:7:28. https://youtu.be/18eYI-Uh57Y
