Turkish delight for Lucy!

Stunning success came to New Mill triathlete Lucy Farquhar who took silver for Great Britain at the Triathlon Junior European Cup Final in Alanya, Turkey. This was a well deserved result for the committed 20 year old, who runs with Holmfirth Harriers, rides with Holme Valley Wheelers and swims with Borough of Kirklees.

Talented juniors from across Europe battled in 30 degree heat in the historic Mediterranean town of Alanya to become European Cup champion. Farquhar was quick to show her intentions, emerging first from the 750m sea swim in a group of six athletes. The leaders seized the opportunity to distance race favourite Fanni Soós of Hungary, and soon the lead group was down to four who pushed one another to an unassailable lead over the 20km bike course. Following a another smooth transition Farquhar pushed the pace as they set out on the 5km run taking Sophie Fischer of Germany and Turkish Champion Ilayda Kara with her. Russian Daria Lushnikova was distanced by this surge, and the three leaders were now fighting it out for the podium spots. The race and the heat was now sizzling as they each tried to break one another. The only respite was the welcome oasis of an occasional water station where the athletes dowsed their engines. It was at the last of these that Fischer forced a gap to open. Farquhar, who has been training all year for this event was determined to make a fight of it and upped her pace again, dropping Kara in the process. She could not close the gap though, finishing 8 seconds down on new European Cup champion Fischer in a time of 1:05:40.

Oxford student Farquhar who combines Triathlon with studying engineering said she was delighted with the result, and looks forward to joining the Senior ranks next season. Later in the day, Leeds based triathlete Lucy Hall won gold in the Senior Womens triathlon, with Sophie Coldwell taking bronze. Commentators at the event remarked of Farquhar and Hall’s success that it was a great result for Yorkshire!
