Holmfirth once again had a great set of athletes representing the club.  The first to take on the course was Richard Mcleod in the para duathlon over the sprint distance of 5k run, 20k bike and 2.5k final run.  The course took the athletes out and back on the “Long Walk” for two laps.  Richard looked strong as he finished the first of the runs and headed towards transition to collect his bike for the 4 lap bike course.  After a great bike on the undulating and challenging course, passing the Copper Horse on all occasions, he went out onto the final run safely in 2nd position which is where he finished, a superb performance once again.

Lewis Byram 240

Next up were the Elite Junior men followed a minute later by the Elite Junior Women so it was fast and furious to keep an eye on everything going on, with 4 athletes from Holmfirth in this age group.  The charge of the Junior men set off with Lewis Byram towards the head of the field.  He then lead them back out on the second lap.  Following behind in the Womens race were Lucy Farquhar in the second group of women followed closely by Erica Byram and a little off the pace twin sister Lucy Byram.  Both Erica and Lucy just having moved up to this age group this year and so was the first time at this distance which is double their race distance from last season.

After the second lap the men lead by Lewis headed to transition and he was first out followed quickly by a chase group of around 8.  Not giving any time away Lewis and was joined by another athlete and they worked well together to extend their lead, with the chase pack not making any move to catch them.  They both completed the four laps and headed back towards transition.  With a text book transition from Lewis the two boys shoulder to shoulder headed for the final lap of the run.  Lewis stretched out on the run and before the turn around point managed to get a gap.  Lewis then headed toward the finish area with appreciative support from those watching and come home to win his second British Duathlon Title, in a time of 56:58, Will Crudington finished 2nd in 57:12 and Jack Bond was 3rd in 57:32.

Lewis has now been selected to represent GB in the European Duathlon Championships in Kalkar, Germany on the 16th April.

Meanwhile still out on the course were the Junior Women, Lucy F came off the bike and onto the run with Erica having worked well together in the chase pack on the bike.  Towards the turn around point Lucy F pulled away from Erica showing her endurance experience at this distance.  Lucy B was next onto the final run section having worked hard out on the bike course on her own for the 4 laps.  Lucy F had a fantastic second run and finished strong in a time of 1:7:19 in 10th position, with Erica not too far back also having a good run finished 12th in a time of 1:7:43.  Lucy B finished with a solid second run after suffering breathing difficulties on the first run in a time of 1:13:34.  The winner Serena O’Connor finished in 1:05:06.

The next race of the day was the Youth race over the shorter distance of 2.5k, 10k and 1.25k.  Fionn Kerry was up against a tough field of athletes, this his first Elite Duathlon having just moved up to the Youth age group.  Fionn had a strong first run and was in the second group heading to transition.   Fionn worked hard with a group of boys on the two lap bike course and headed towards transition for the second run section.  Looking strong he set off and managed to pick up a couple of places with a strong finish and finished 34th in a time of 34:46, the winner was Matthew Willis who finished in a time of 31:21.
