Category: Triathlon Published Date Hits: 1917

Holmfirth Harriers elite triathlete, Mark Buckingham completed his season in Australia where he won a World Duathlon Championship Bronze medal.

The championship in Adelaide was the biggest ever duathlon staged in the southern hemisphere and Mark’s first duathlon since April 2013, as he has focused on triathlon during the last two years. He faced a number of duathlon specialists including four men who finished in the top six places at the 2014 World Championships in Spain. The first run consisted of four 2.5k laps and by the end of lap 3 eight men had a 30 second advantage, but at the end of the 10k run the leading group was down to five men with Buckingham recording a time of 31.03.  Mark was second to mount his bike on the 8-lap 40k bike course, which saw five men working hard to increase their advantage on the chasing group. Emilio Martin (Spain) who took the bronze medal last year, made a break and opened a lead of 100m and kept injecting pace to increase his lead. Rob Woestenborghs of Belgium a former World Champion showed his strength on the bike riding through the chasing group, before overtaking the four-man chasing group in pursuit of Martin and went on to record the fastest bike time of 59.01. Martin was first to reach T2 where he had a gap of almost 40 secs on Woestenborghs and almost 70 secs on the next three men.

Buckingham’s bike time of 1.00.32 had kept him in contention, but the constant attacks on the bike saw him suffering with cramp towards the end of the bike course and Benoit Nicolas (France) who won the championship last year was able to move ahead of Buckingham in pursuit of the race leader. Both Nicolas and Buckingham overtook Woestenborghs on the first lap of the final 5k run, but Martin was able to maintain his lead winning in 1.47.11, with Nicolas (France) recording the fastest run time of 15.27 and Mark Buckingham took the bronze medal comfortably with a run time of 16.17 and a total time of 1.48.09.
