John Buckingham reports...

Last weekend Holmfirth Harriers' Mark Buckingham represented Great Britain in the seventh round of the World Triathlon Series in Hamburg, Germany, a sprint race comprising of a 1 lap 750m swim, 6-laps on the bike totalling 20km and 2-lap run course of 5km.

Bronze in the Relay - well done Son!

Immediately prior to the race Buckingham had a tough block of altitude training in Switzerland and hoped he would benefit from the physiological effects. However, despite the fact that two of the female athletes from his Leeds training base had super performances finishing 2nd and 3rd in the women’s race, Buckingham struggled throughout the race and finished a disappointing 32nd place (53.49) out of 68 starters. The winner was Vincent Luis of France in 51.54, followed by reigning world champion, Javier Gomez-Noya 51.58 and his Spanish teammate Mario Mola 52.20.

The following day Mark represented Great Britain in the Mixed Team Relay World Championships. Each team had two men and two women who raced over the super sprint distance, a 300m swim, a 2-lap bike course of 6.6 km and a 2-lap 5km run. There were 18 teams racing in the championship and GB were the defending champions, although they faced a strong team from France who had won the European title the previous week in Geneva. This was a rare opportunity for Mark to take his place in the team which is normally dominated by his training partners the Brownlee brothers, both out with injuries.

Non Stanford and
Gordon Benson

The GB team got off to a great start with the ladies individual silver medallist, Vicky Holland moving them into 1st place on the opening leg. Gordon Benson had a solid performance, but was just edged into 4th place on leg two. Non Stanford, bronze medallist the previous day had a storming performance on leg 3 and handed over to Buckingham on the anchor leg in first place. France, Australia and Germany were hot on his heels and although he maintained his lead, on the swim, the four teams came together on the bike and as they approached transition they were all together.  Vincent Luis of France, the winner of the Sprint Triathlon the previous day moved into the lead on the run and Ryan Bailey of Australia moved into 2nd place. Buckingham was visibly drained and was also passed by Gregor Buchholz of Germany, but he knew the German team had to serve a 10-second penalty, as the third leg woman had failed to fasten her helmet properly before removing her bike from the racking. With about 100m to the finish line, the German athlete stopped at the penalty box and Buckingham surged ahead into 3rd place and clinched bronze medals for Great Britain in 1:20:52 ahead of fourth placed Germany 1:21:00. France won the race in 1:20:33 and Australia won the silver medals in 1:20:42. Although Buckingham was disappointed with his own personal performance, his teammates were ecstatic to win bronze medals in the absence of the Brownlee brothers.
