Graves Park in Sheffield was the venue for the Northern Athletics Cross Country relays last Saturday, where Holmfirth Harriers were represented with teams across both the junior and senior races.

The course is a favourite for many, with its undulating but fast 2-mile course for the senior races. The weather was kinder than had been forecast, but the going was still muddy and very windy, making times slower than last year.

Holmfirth women fielded three strong teams, each made up of three legs. Racing amongst the top clubs in the whole of the North of England, Holmfirth showed their class with all three teams finishing in the top half of the field.

First off for the ‘A’ team was Olivia Sykes. With teams fielding their fastest athletes on the first leg, the competition is fierce and Olivia put in a solid performance to finish 8th (12:28). Helen Berry took over on the second leg, taking the team up to 4th (12:49). Ruby Sykes had a particularly strong run, and only losing places to two of the fastest runners of the day, returned in a credible 6th place (13:01).

The ‘B’ team was also very strong and consistent throughout, beating many other ‘A’ teams, finishing in 19th place. The Byram sisters, Lucy and Erica, were well supported by veteran Maggie Sykes who has been running strongly after a successful summer on the track.

Claire Leaver is back to form after having a baby 10 months ago, running an excellent first leg for the ‘C’ team. She was supported by Helena Croft, with Amy Kettlewell running in her first senior race at this event on the final leg.

The ladies title was retained by Lincoln Wellington AC, in a sprint finish with Birtley AC, and H Knowles-Jones of Warrington clocked the fastest time in 11:30. 56 complete teams finished.

In the Senior Men’s race Holmfirth were able to field 3 full teams and, with some strong individual performances, were able to finish in 17th, 37th & 57th respectively. It was Aaron Kettlewell who led out the ‘A’ team and, after a tough leg, returned in 10th (10.57) to hand over to Alex Robinson who had a strong run to finish in 13th (11.35). Stu Sharp took over on the 3rd leg and ran solidly to finish in 16th (12.07) before handing over to veteran Steve Green (12.13) who brought the team home in 17th position.
