The Saucony English Cross Country Relay Championships was held in Berry Hill Park in Mansfield last Saturday, on an undulating and spectator-friendly course. Attracting all standards of athlete, from grassroots to the elite, runners get to compete alongside Olympians such as Steph Twell, Laura Weightman and Andy Vernon. Over 1,000 were entered across the 10 races of the day

Holmfirth Harriers sent a number of teams down to the event, with the greatest success coming in the Junior age groups.

The Under 20 women were first off, with the talented trio of Olivia Sykes, Lucy and Erica Byram. Oliva ran a quick leg in 16th (9:07), with Lucy picking up five places (9:35) and sister Erica maintaining 11th position on the final leg (9:44). Daisy Smith also ran an incomplete ‘B’ team due to late injuries and finished in 49th on leg 1 (13:53).

The Senior women fielded the maximum three teams, finishing 19th, 56th and 92nd. Katie Walshaw found the race tough but did well in a class field to return on the first leg in 31st (10:34). Helen Berry ran strongly throughout, picking up 10 places (10:48) and fellow veteran, Maggie Sykes picked off another couple of teams over the 3km course coming home in 19th place (11:34). Helena Croft took on the challenge of the first leg on the ‘B’ team, running well in 53rd place (11:32). Kath Farquhar gained two places on leg two (12:11) and Helen Pettit put in a fine effort to bring the team home in 56th (13:24). A delighted Jo Bailey-Taylor smashed her PB on this course by over a minute on leg 1 for the ‘C’ team in 102nd (13:35). New member, Lizzie Sutherland, in her first race for the club did well to gain twelve places on leg 2 (13:16) and Debbie Beck ran the anchor leg completing the team in 92nd place (15:00)

Holmfirth Harriers’ promising junior male athletes had two teams taking part in the 3km event. Chris Law started the first leg for the ‘A’ team and ran a strong leg to finish in 42nd (9.24). It was then Aaron Kettlewell who had a powerful run to overhaul 22 places to put the team into 20th (9.17). Lewis Byram ran a solid leg to maintain his position and bring the team home in 20th (9.25).

Kai Sunman led out for the ‘B’ Team and he ran well for 49th (9.46). Joe Law followed and worked hard to come home in 50th (10.24). It was then up to Seth Waterman to claw 5 places back to put the team in 45th (10.12).

It was left to the veteran men to make up a team in the Senior Men’s 4x5km event, where they finished 119th; Steve Green 102nd (18:04), Jonny Sykes 113th (19:38), Mark Law 110th (20:35) and Jason Haigh 119th (22:34).
