Isabel Crowe, Isabel Richardson, Elena Inch

With young teams in many of the age groups and a number of athletes making their cross country debut the first meeting of the 2015 West Yorkshire cross country league provided mixed fortunes for Holmfirth’s junior athletes. Top performances from the Club were in the U11 races where Isabel Richardson ran away from the field to finish in first place, her first league win and in the boys Matthew Burke also provided the club with a winning performance with teammate Kristian Green finishing just 3 seconds behind in second place. The U11 boys backed this up with a team win too Oliver Hick one of the clubs youngest athlete’s 17th place enough to clinch it.  In the u17 women’s race new recruit Alice Moore, fought it out for the win with team mate Olivia Sykes. The girls finished in 1st and 2nd place and won the team with Erica Byram in 9th just ahead of sister Lucy in 10th. Another top performance came from another new recruit Juliette Branford who ran with great composure to finish 5th in the U15 girls as did Seth Waterman in the U17 men’s race.

The threatened rain showers never materialised and the sun shone on Thornes Park in Wakefield  as the youngest athletes lined up for the first races of the day in the U11 category,  For many of whom  this was their first experience of cross country.  Elena Inch had a tremendous run to finish in 9th place with the third team counter Isabel Crowe in 32nd this her first race for the club also with Isabel Richardson 1st the team finished 4th on the day. Completing the line up for the club were Libby Pringle 48th , Annie McLean 50th, Edy Lindley 51st  and Aoife Kerry 55th  the latter 3 girls all competing in the league for the first time. The club was also well represented in the U11 boys’ race, Matthew, Kristian and Oliver were backed up by Soljai Waterman 37th and Calum McFarlane in 41th both very strong performances.

Another athlete experiencing cross country for the first time was Brandon Kudita who was first home for the Holmfirth contingent in 29th position in the U13 boys’ race. He was joined by Sean Keddie and Thomas James both with good solid runs finishing in 56th and 64th respectively. In the girls’ race at this age group Frances Keddie was first home in an excellent 12th place – this the largest field of any of the junior races with 72 athletes taking part. Lucy Lindley had a great run also, in 18th and with Mollie Scaramuzza completing the team in 40th place the girls team finished a close 4th. Just behind Mollie were Amelie Stewart 47th, Ruby Yates 51st and Lydia Throssel also running for the first time in 55th.

U17 girls start WYXCL 1 240

U17 girls race start

Aside from Alice, Olivia and the Byram twins the U17girls race featured strong performances from a number of other Holmfirth athletes. Amy Kettlewell continued  her good form of late to finish in 16th, Ellie Sunman after a blistering start where she lead out the field finished in 22nd, Francesca James in her first ever cross country race ran strongly in 31st and Daisy Smith was just behind in 33rd. In the boys Harry Shelbourne had a great run to finish 14th.

Senior Men team victory

In the Junior/Senior men’s race it was, once again, veteran Dave Watson who led the way for Holmfirth Harriers. Dave had a great race and was in the leading pack for 3 laps before succumbing to the relentless pace of the leading group. The eventual winner was Phil Sesemann, a guest runner from Blackheath, in 32.34 with Dave Watson finishing in 6th position (1st M45) in 33.41. Dave Turnbull, after having a tremendous tussle with Junior athlete’s Chris Law and Lewis Byram in the early stages, proved his strength to return in 8th (1st M35) 34.06. It was then the Junior Men who came through strong to bolster the team with Chris Law leading the way in 13th (2nd U20) closely followed by Lewis Byram in 15th (3rd U20) in 34.51. Alex Robinson also had a good run to finish 20th in 35.59. The final counter for the team was Lavell Pierre who came through the field nicely to help secure a comfortable team victory in 31st with a time of 36.50.

Other Holmfirth placings: Phil Hewitt (43rd), Darren Hanson (53rd & 1st M50), Gary Graham (81st) Mark Law (89th), Garreth Humphries (95th), Andrew Shelbourne (97th), David Williams (102nd), Wayne Byram (115th), Kevin Yewlett (130th & 3rd M60), Rob Kersey (133rd), Eddie Hinchliffe (133rd), Matthew rose (139th), Juan Biurrun (149th), Simon Barrans (150th) & Tim Cock (167th & 2nd M70).

The Senior ladies turned out two teams, including a few new and welcome faces. The race took in 1 small and 2 large laps, over a distance of 5.75km. Despite some key team members missing they managed to finish 5th team. Helen Berry was first back in 5th place (1st V40), supported by Claire Leaver in 20th, Kath Farquhar in 29th (2nd V45) – who had a lot of ground to make up after stopping to re-tie her laces shortly after the start - and Vet 60 Lesley Ewart having an impressive run in 43rd.
