British Masters XC 2015 start 240

Just started

The domestic cross country season was brought to a close last weekend with both major Junior and Vets Championship events taking place. Whilst a number of Harriers were over in Blackburn competing in and supporting the English Schools Championships, Helen Berry was the sole Holmfirth representative at the British Masters Cross Country Championships, held at Ruthin School in North Wales.

The first of the two Masters races saw all women’s age groups over 35 and the men over 65 compete over a 6km course of farm fields, incorporating some mud, tracks and even a farm yard (a first for a cross country race!). Helen set off comfortably with the lead group which included fellow England Masters International Claire Martin (V40) of Telford and former British International Lucy Elliot (V45) of Winchester. Elliot soon fell off the pace, leaving the race open for the younger two athletes. Feeling strong heading into the second lap, Helen gained on the leader to take the race on over the final 2km. But the current Champion wasn’t going to let her title go without a fight, and after a sprint finish Helen lost out by just 3 seconds to take the silver in 22:55. Her performance was a good end to her successful cross country season and will earn her a place in the England team in the British and Irish Masters International Cross Country race in November.

The second race saw the men aged 35-64 compete over 8km, with Ady Whitwam (V35) of Morpeth crossing the line first in 28:58.
