UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships

Cofton Park, Birmingham - Sat 7th March

Cofton Park in Birmingham once again hosted the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships recently. The event doubles as the trials for the World Championships to be held in China later this month.

An invitation-only event, athletes are selected from the County Championships held back in January and Holmfirth Harriers had 4 athletes representing Yorkshire and one representing Warwickshire. This is often the penultimate, if not final, domestic cross country event of the season for most athletes.

In the Senior Women’s race, the third on the programme for the day, Helen Berry had a superb race, finishing the 8km course strongly in 33rd place (27:29) and 4th counter for Yorkshire (6 to count from a team of 9). Yorkshire regularly dominate this event and this year was no different, with the 6 team counters clocking up 211 points, just 6 ahead of Hampshire, to take team gold. The recently crowned English National Cross Country Champion, Lily Partridge, added the Inter Counties title, winning for Surrey in 25:07.

Erica Byram

The next race with Holmfirth representation was the Under 17 girls. Olivia Sykes had unfortunately pulled out due to injury, though sisters Erica and Lucy Byram both made the Yorkshire team this year; a great representation for Holmfirth in a team of just 8. Erica ran well, putting in a fine performance in 65th place (22:44) with Lucy struggling a little with her breathing, but still battling on to finish just inside the top half of the field in 138th (24:12)

In the Under 20 women’s race, Lucy Farquhar was not going to let a mere cold get in the way of sporting her first Yorkshire vest! She found the race tough and did well to finish 120th (28:34).

The final race of the day, the Senior Men, saw Huddersfield University student, Peter Brookes, represent his home county of Warwickshire, having finished 3rd in their Championships in January. Peter has been running very well of late and finished the 12km course in 112th (38:33), fourth for the Warwickshire team. The race was won by Scotland East athlete Andrew Buchart in 34:26, with the North East taking the team title (6 to count).
