Sun Shines on Junior  Harriers in West Yorkshire League in Leeds

Holmfirth athletes were back in action once more over the country in the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League on Sunday at West Park Leeds.  The gently undulating course and the recent dry weather coupled with larger fields of athletes in most races than in the first meeting made for some great racing.  The sun was out  as were the deck chairs and with large numbers of  families enjoying the racing and the good weather it was a perfect setting for a superb day of racing for the club.

Lavell Pierre and Chris Law
sealing team victory
in U17 mens race

After the clubs excellent performance at the first meeting two weeks ago expectations were high and  athletes and teams certainly proved equal to the challenge with something for the travelling supporters to shout about, with at least one  full team of athletes from the club   in all ten  races, including every junior age group, Holmfirth the only club to achieve this. The junior teams did not let their senior club mates down and certainly lived up to expectations with 2 winning their races , 3 finishing in third spot and a further 2 in fourth.  There were some great individual performances too, second place for  Lewis Byram, 3rd for Erica Byram, 4th Olivia Sykes  and many other top ten placings.

The days racing began with the U11 races. The boy’s races was a fast and furious affair featuring 9 Holmfirth athletes.  Frank Johnson was first back for the club in 9th place an improvement of 12 places on the first race, with Sam Crawshaw and William Pickering hot on his heels in 11th and 12th, all 3 boys separated by only 3 seconds, Just yards behind Marshall Wilkinson  in 15th. Next home were Billy Browne and Ralph Johnson 26th and 30th, with Louis Pain 43rd, Thomas James 48th and Callum McFarlane 57th completing the Holmfirth contingent.  The team race was close with only 2 points separating 2nd and the Holmfirth boys in 4th, very encouraging results for the club as many of these boys have another year in this age group.
