Graves Park, Sheffield – 18th October 2014

Last weekend was very busy for Holmfirth Harriers, with several races taking place over two days.  First off on Saturday 18th was the Northern Athletics Cross Country relays at Graves Park in Sheffield.

Holmfirth’s ladies had a great afternoon, fielding two teams over a fast and undulating 2 mile course.

GB international Katie Walshaw got the ‘A’ team off to a great start after a battle with rival Rosie Taylor of Durham City on leg 1, to finish in 2nd place. Helen Berry continued her excellent form with a strong run taking the team up to first place on leg 2 and with Helen Fines on the final leg being chased down by a young Rotherham athlete, the Holmfirth trio finished in an impressive silver medal position behind their South Yorkshire rivals.

Lucy Farquhar has made a successful step up to senior level, leading the ‘B’ team off with a fast time, in 15th place.  Ruby Sykes dropped just one place on leg 2 and Jo Bailey-Taylor made the most of the position her faster team mates put her in, coming home in 20th place.

Lydia Turner of Birtley AC ran the fastest time in 11:35

The men’s event took place over the same 2 mile course which made for a very fast race.  One of the club’s top athletes, Richard Smith, returned on leg 1 in 20th place.  Youngster Kai Sunman had a great run to pick up one place on leg 2, with Scott Smith running slightly quicker on leg 3 but dropping a few places to 22nd. Another youngster who has made the leap to senior level this season, Joe Law, put in a fine performance on the final leg to bring the team home in 20th place.

The Championship title was taken by Liverpool AC in an overall time of 42:59, with Andrew Heyes of Hallamshire clocking the fastest time of the day in 10:04..
