UK Counties Athletic Union – Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships, Cofton Park, Birmingham

Saturday 8th March 2014

Cofton Park in Birmingham once again hosted the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships for last Saturday.

An invitation-only event, athletes are selected from the County Championships held back in January and Holmfirth Harriers had 6 athletes representing Yorkshire.

Katie Walshaw CAU 28229In the Senior Women’s race, Northern Champion Katie Walshaw and Northern Gold winning team- mate Helen Berry flew the flag for Holmfirth.  Katie made her usual fast start and led the field in the early stages.  She soon settled in to the pace and had an impressive run in 14th and second Yorkshire counter.  Helen Berry brought her excellent cross country season to a close with her best performance to date in this event with 45th place, a huge 28 places up on 2012.  The Yorkshire ladies packed well and were tipped for success.  With all 9 runners in the top 50 they demonstrated their strength in depth.  Just 6 to count ensured a clear team win over Scotland East, 57 points adrift.

Olivia Sykes CAU1The next race with Holmfirth representation was the Under 15 girls.

Olivia Sykes made the going look easy as she moved through the field impressively to finish 18th and second team counter.  With only 4 to count of 8 runners, the team secured Bronze medals.  Erica Byram found the going tough but put in a fine performance in 81st place.

In the Senior Men’s race, road specialist Dave Turnbull may not have had high expectations, but put in a tremendous effort to not only make the 6-to count team, but was 4th counter in 88th place. The 6-to count team finished in fourth place.  Dave Watson, in 147th place, helped the 9-to count team to Bronze medals.  At the front of the field, spectators enjoyed an exciting race between English Cross Country Champion Richard Vernon and runner up Richard Goodman.  The tables were turned in the final stages, with Goodman taking the Inter Counties title.

Holmfirth’s Lewis Byram had been selected for the Yorkshire Under 17 men’s team but unfortunately had to withdraw before the event due to illness.

Highlights will be shown on Sky Sports 2 this Saturday (15th) at 12 noon
