A large contingent from Holmfirth Harriers travelled over to Leeds last Sunday, 17th, to compete in the third race in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League.  The race was hosted by Leeds City and was held at West Park for the first time in many years.

WYCCL ladiesThe ladies course was longer than the standard distance in this League, with the ladies running 6,800m as opposed to the usual 5,500m which played to the strengths of some of Holmfirth’s ladies.

Katie Walshaw led from the start, tiring out her nearest rival on lap one of the three lap course, and leaving her with a clear victory.  Helen Berry ran a strong race in 4th and Claire Leaver’s tough training schedule paid off with a fantastic 8th place.  With Lucy Needham running well in 25th, the Holmfirth quartet claimed team victory for the first time in this year’s League.  The longer distance proved hard work for Ruby Sykes, in her first year in the Senior race, and she showed great determination in the final lap to finish 37th.  Sprinter Cara Penfold put her talents to the test in the final stages of the race to pick of several athletes, coming home in 46th place.  Whilst the field was slightly depleted in terms of numbers due to the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k race that morning, the Holmfirth athletes each ran some of their best races of the season so far.
