West Yorkshire XC League Race 3 – 17th November

A large contingent from Holmfirth Harriers travelled over to Leeds last Sunday, 17th, to compete in the third race in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League.  The race was hosted by Leeds City and was held at West Park for the first time in many years.

WYCCL ladiesThe ladies course was longer than the standard distance in this League, with the ladies running 6,800m as opposed to the usual 5,500m which played to the strengths of some of Holmfirth’s ladies.

Katie Walshaw led from the start, tiring out her nearest rival on lap one of the three lap course, and leaving her with a clear victory.  Helen Berry ran a strong race in 4th and Claire Leaver’s tough training schedule paid off with a fantastic 8th place.  With Lucy Needham running well in 25th, the Holmfirth quartet claimed team victory for the first time in this year’s League.  The longer distance proved hard work for Ruby Sykes, in her first year in the Senior race, and she showed great determination in the final lap to finish 37th.  Sprinter Cara Penfold put her talents to the test in the final stages of the race to pick of several athletes, coming home in 46th place.  Whilst the field was slightly depleted in terms of numbers due to the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k race that morning, the Holmfirth athletes each ran some of their best races of the season so far.

Full ladies results;

1st Katie Walshaw; 24:52, 4th Helen Berry; 26:31, 8th Claire Leaver; 27:41, 25th Lucy Needham; 29:44, 37th Ruby Sykes; 31:01, 46th Cara Penfold; 32:16

Peter Brookes WYCCLIn the senior men’s race it was veteran athlete Dave Watson who, once again, led the Holmfirth challenge. In a tough battle on a muddy 10.3 km course Dave had to settle for second place as the youngster, James Hall from Wharfedale Harriers, took the honours. Also having a strong run was junior athlete Peter Brookes who finished in a creditable 8th place (3rd Junior). Continuing his return from injury, it was another veteran, Alistair Rees (25th) who was third counter followed by Triathlete Craig Boggon in 30th. Following a 10k road race in the morning it was Steven Eastwood who came home next (43rd) closely followed by Jonny Sykes (45th). These results ensured Holmfirth finished as 3rd Team.

Full men’s results: 2nd Dave Watson; 34:59, 8th Peter Brookes; 36:32, 25th Alistair Rees; 38:35, 30th Craig Boggon; 38:57, 43rd Steven Eastwood; 39:55, 45th Jonny Sykes; 40:04, 51st Dan Shaw; 40:32, 69th Phil Hewitt; 41:27, 74th Chris Beadle; 41:49, 76th David Williams; 42:03, 79th Mark Lawson; 42:15, 83rd Andrew Shelbourne; 42:20, 90th Wayne Byram; 42:48, 102nd Phil Hobbs; 44:29, 114th Kevin Yewlett; 45:26, 126th Robert Hinchliffe-Smith; 47:38, 131st Julio d’Escrivan; 48:47, 132nd John Field; 49:10.
