Sun Shines on Harriers in West Yorkshire League in Guisley

Holmfirth athletes were back in action once more over the country in the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League on Saturday at Nunroyd Park in Guisley.  Legends have been written about the mud at this course and for the team mudlarks it certainly came up trumps with several very wet sections which coupled with a few testing hills made for some great tough cross country races. The sun was out  as were the deck chairs and with large numbers of  families enjoying the racing and the good weather it was a perfect setting for one of the clubs best ever days of racing.

After the clubs excellent performance at the first meeting back in October expectations were high and  athletes and teams certainly proved equal to the challenge with something for the travelling supporters to shout about  in every race and every age group. Shout they certainly did as they witnessed four of the races being won by Holmfirth athletes and additionally another eleven athletes finishing inside  the top ten in their races.

These fantastic individual performance aside the story really was one of great team performances with athletes junior and senior running their socks off for their club and teams right through the age groups.  Four of the ten races were won by Holmfirth teams and the club finished teams in all ten of the age group races. Families were also a key theme for the club at this fixture with mums and dads competing alongside their kids.

Anyone who missed the first race of the day missed a real treat with Holmfirth lads Callum Durrans and Freddie Wilkinson battling it out at the front of the race sprinting away to finish first and second, both thrilled with their performances. The excitement didn’t end there however the Holmfirth boys were finishing thick and fast Ned Johson 6th and Samuel Bedingfield 8th separated by  just 2 seconds and Arron Smith just yards behind in 13th, Jack Marsden another second behind in 15th. Dan Tinson had a brilliant debut for the club coming home in 24th, George Hobbs 34th and Tom Haley-Porteous just behind in 35th. Both Sam Brown 40th and William Amaral 45th can be proud of themselves on their debut with strong runs and Joseph Charlesworth and Dominic Drake completed a fantastic turnout from the youngest members of the club finishing in 55th and 62nd. The boys clinched first team place with ease.

The U11 girls also featured 3 debutants for the club who along with more seasoned performers – if you can be seasoned age 10- completed a strong team  finishing in fifth position. Sunnivah Waterman was first home for the club in 11th, Millie Yates had a great run in 15th, first timers Alice Shelbourne and Freya Durrans evenly matched in 27th and 30th respectively and Ella McFarlane also racing for the first time finished just ahead of Elpina Waterman in 35th and 36th and Lizzy Burdon in 40th.

There were equally strong performances for the team in the U13 girls race Genevieve Durrans first home for the Holmfirth contingent in 9th place. Sophie Allan ran well 13th and Libby Shepherd 18th.  Olivia Battye had a great run to finish 22nd, Eve Middleton 27th and Lia Carter 29th. Charlotte Eastwood in her first race of the season ran strongly in 34th and Holly Bailey-Taylor 38th. Isabelle Haley-Porteous in her first outing of the year was 54th and Emmy Bailey-Taylor had a great run to finish in 60th.  The girls also finished 5th team.

The boy’s race at this age group saw a great team performance from the Holmfirth boys.  This was a close run race with only 30 secs separating the top 12 runners; Nicky Farquhar was first back in 12th place with Ollie Rees in 15th, with his usual gutsy performance fighting for every place. Will Johnson was only just behind in 19th place and Harry Shelbourne in his first outing for the club in 27th. Finn Kerry  battled through for 47th with Isaac Brown also with his first run for the club in 51st. Harry Hobbs improved on his position in the last meeting to finish in 66th position.

Olivia Sykes provided the clubs second victory of the day in the U15 girl’s race matching her first place from the first race. Olivia shared the lead for most of the race with Louise Redmond of Halifax who was unable to stay with Olivia as she accelerated 400m out from the finish powering through to win by 7 seconds. Olivia was joined by her usual partners in crime in this race Lucy Byram returning from illness at the last race to clinch a tremendous 6th place closely followed by her sister Erica in 8th.  Daisy Smith had one of her best races to date with a really commited performance to finish in 16th and Louise Adams in her first cross country race for several years ran well to finish in 46th. The girls were first in the team standings 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Lewis Byram made up for a disappointing run in the first league meeting with a solid win in the U15 boys race. Like Olivia Lewis was tracked for most of the race by the eventual second place runner  Robert Etherington of Wetherby. Lewis managed to break away towards the end of the second lap and powered to victory winning by six seconds.  With three of the Holmfirth U15 boys away racing for their school.,team manager Wayne Byram had been concerned about the boys team placing. He need not have worried however. Seth Waterman had a great run in 7th place and Alex Robinson only in his second cross country race came through to finish in 19th place and with that secured team victory for the boys.  Running for the first time in a Holmfirth vest Lavell Pierre showed great potential running very strongly coming home in 24th, Andrew Farquhar just behind in 27th and Isaac Shepherd 32nd. Like the U15 girls the boys finished first in the team standings a great result.

The final junior races of the day the U17 men and women were no less hard fought affairs. In the men’s Jonty Winn was once again the first Holmfirth team counter  with a strong run in 17th place, Eddie Hinchcliffe improved significantly on his run in the previous league fixture to finish in 20th the third team spot was taken by Michael Adams in his first cross country race for several years. Robert Hinchcliffe finished in 39th. In the U17 women Lucy Farquhar achieved a top ten spot finishing in 8th Ruby Sykes had a strong run in 13th and Sophie Spencer completed the team in 17th.

Holmfirth women romp to victory

Holmfirth’s ladies team returned to winning form after finishing second to rivals Bingley at the first race three weeks ago.  Fourteen athletes turned out in their amber vests, the second largest club contingent in the record 135-strong field.

Katie Walshaw maintained her lead in the League with another win, though this time without challenge as she finished almost a minute ahead of the second placed runner, Jo Buckley of Bingley.  Helen Berry was back on form with a very pleasing third place.  New recruit, Helen Fines, a mountain running international, finished 6th and Kath Farquhar had a tremendous run in 12th to ensure she was final counter in the team.  Holmfirth secured team victory with 22 points, half that of second team Leeds City.

Claire Leaver had made a fast start, settling down as the race progressed to finish well in 17th.  Other performances of note came from Lorraine Smith, in her first cross country race, finishing 30th, and Lucy Verrill who thrived without the pressure of recent relay team performances to finish 51st. Senior Men solid team performance

With several of the young guns who had achieved second team spot in the Senior men’s race  at race  one in Wetherby, expectations of a similar result weren’t very high. This proved to be the case at Nunroyd Park, Guiseley. The course was very boggy at the start of the day and, after nine earlier races, had become a quagmire in places making running extremely hard going. Richard Anderson, a successful triathlete, showed his strength to come through as Holmfirth’s first counter in 5th place (34.17), an improvement of five places for him from the Wetherby race. Also showing good form was Dave Watson who finished 11th place (35.18), the first V40 athlete. Returning from injury, Alistair Rees was the next finisher in 63rd (38.53) closely followed by Alistair Langron in 68th (39.14). Craig Boggon worked his way through the field for a well-deserved 86th (40.31). The final counter for the team was Gary Graham in 96th (40.48). This earned the team 5th place overall out of a total of 21 clubs competing. Other Holmfirth finishers were Jonny Sykes (117th), Wayne Byram (120th), David Williams (123rd), Maz Khoueiry (142nd), Chris Beadle (145th), Brandon Holroyd (162nd), Kevin Yewlett (170th), John Field (203rd), Simon Edwards (209th) and Tim Cock (212th).
