English Cross Country Relays – Saturday 3rd November, Berry Hill Park, Mansfield

After their superb showing  two weeks previously against local rivals  in the West Yorkshire League 12  teams from Holmfirth were this weekend up against much stiffer opposition competing in the National Cross country Relays at Berry Hill Park Mansfield.

Such was the quality of the field that even in the junior age group races around a hundred teams lined up in the junior age groups. The U15s boys and girls performed well finishing just outside the top 20, the boys A team 23rd and the girls 24th, the girls race the toughest of all the junior events with 120 athletes setting off on leg one. Lewis Byram anchoring the U15 boys recorded 6:50 for his leg just outside the top ten fastest times of the day.

U13 girls and boys finished also well inside the top half of the field in 33rd and 32nd respectively like the U15 girls both these teams young enough to contest the same age group next year. The U17 girls team running over the longer 2.5km course finished a creditable 36th and the boys running like the senior women over 3km 58th. The club also took B teams in both the U15 boys and U13 girls age group to Mansfield the boys finishing 67th and the girls 69th.

Holmfirth’s leading cross country ladies were out in force with an impressive three teams competing in the 3km, 3-leg course.  On leg one, in which a huge field 122 athletes started, Katie Walshaw set off for the ‘A’ team and ran her usual determined race to finish in an excellent 12th place in 10:34. Helen Berry returned from injury and after a fairly frenetic handover ran a steady race on leg 2, dropping just 3 places in 11:26. Claire Leaver had a very good run on the anchor leg for the ‘A’ team, with a time of 11:35 bringing the team home in 18th place in 33:36 overall.

The ‘B’ team was lead off by Margaret Sykes who had clearly recovered well from her recent Chester Marathon as she handed over in 11:49 and 57th place.Maggie  Nikki Brown gained a few places on leg 2 in 12:29 and Kath Farquhar ran a solid final leg in 11:53, gaining several places to secure 40th place in 36:12 overall.  Cara Penfold was delighted with her first leg effort for the ‘C’ team, beating her 2011 by one minute, in 12:28.  Aideen Farrell  on leg 2 found such a short race tricky to pace, and did well to gain 6 places in 13:02.  Lucy Verrill gained a further 5 places with her 13:12 run on leg 2, bringing the team home in 62nd position (38:43 overall).

The title was won by Birchfield Harriers ‘A’ team who finished in a time of 30:45, and whose second leg runner, H Walker, recorded the fastest leg of the day in 9:46.

Richard AHolmfirth’s men managed to field one team, which was made up of their class youngsters.  The men ran a 2-lap, 5km course with 4 legs.  First off was Richard Smith who crossed the line in 59th (16:44), followed by Richard Anderson in 17:20 and 53rd place. James Little continued to gain places on leg 3 with a run of 17:22 (47th place), as did Alistair Langron on the anchor leg, clocking 17:39 to bring the team home in 45th place out of 157 complete teams in an overall time of 1:09:07.  The men’s event was won by Belgrave Harriers in 1:02:18. Stockport’s Steve Vernon recorded the fastest leg of the day in 15:17.

Holmfirth athletes will be once again out in force this Saturday which sees the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country league at Nunroyd Park in Guisley.
