It was 50 years since the Holmfirth 15 was first run on a Saturday in 1968,  For 2018, the day started with sunny, dry, calm weather and excellent conditions for running.

The 15 mile road race was the first to get going at 9:30.  The course consisted of a small loop around the high school and two large loops around the New Mill, Honley and Holmfirth “circuit”. There were 112 finishers, a big increase on previous two years which have been around the 80 mark.

Holmfirth 15 winner
Josh Sambrook

The winner was Josh Sambrook from Cambridge, running for Leeds University in 1:28:41, second place was the event organisers, Cannonball's John Lloyd finishing in 1:32:06.  Isabel Rea (West 4 Harriers) was the first female in 1:43:14.

The 10k, which uses the same circuit but replaces the loop to Honley with a tough climb up above Smithy Place set off five minutes later at 9:35,  This year we had 187 finishers, first home and the winner was Scott Hinchliffe from Penistone finishing in 33:49.  Marie Boland (unattached) was first female home in 42:11.

We had brilliant 40 helpers on the day and chip timing provided by Cannonball.  Dene Townend is Race Director and is invaluable to the race along with the committee. The day went well with most marshals reporting busy roads and 99% of motorists good but a few were quite nasty.

Another big problem could have been when Dene was going to start the race he had a cash bag of £ notes with over £500 in his pocket and he lost it.  Incredibly a runner from Oldham found it under a car tyre and handed it to me!!

After being let down at the last minute, Maxine kindly provided refreshments from her coffee van.

The proceeds of the race are split between Holmfirth Harriers and Kirkwood Hospice.

Thank you to all who participated and made the day a success.
