Vale of York Half Marathon

Vale of York Half Marathon - 20 September 2015

September weather can go either way, fortunately today it was the right way and we woke early for the journey to Sherburn-in-Elmet, Selby, North Yorkshire.

Which way to the start line?

On arrival we entered a network of narrow roads which led to the airfield, lined with what appeared to be RAF cadets we were directed to our parking space. We arrived just before 8am, it was quiet and with little fuss we collected our race numbers and started to prepare ourselves for the race.

At 9:15 we made our way across to the start which was to be a section of the runway. Seven Harriers were present, each with their own personal goals..

Race conditions were near on perfect. If anything, there was nervousness that it might get too warm but we'd take that in our stride. Waiting for stragglers, the race started five minutes late - a countdown and then off we went!

The race was chip timed so no pressure to get right to the front; with that however, there was some congestion as we made our way along the runway. After 0.5mi we turned around and headed in the opposite direction - pan flat until 1.7mi as we turned onto the Bishopdyke Road (B122). The course was flat with just a couple of climbs (we're talking 25ft over half a mile!) on mainly closed country roads, surrounded by fields.  We headed out for 5mi, then a 3mi loop and then a 5mi stretch back towards the airfield. The weather conditions remained calm throughout.

The results for Holmfirth were Rob Kersey 01:36:41 (2nd M60); Kevin Yewlett 01:38:22 (4th M60); Helen Pettit 01:39:15 (5th F50); Jen Wolstenholme 01:41:16; Matthew Rose 01:41:25; Debbie Beck 02:02:26. Mark Catney, currently in the process of joining was participating in his first half marathon - he completed under his two hour target in 1:51:08.

Finished: Jen Wolstenholme, Matthew Rose and Debbie Beck

The race winners were Dominic Shaw of New Marske Harriers AC setting a new course record in 1:07:44 and Susan Partridge from Leeds City AC in 1:16:00.

The race was a counter for the Yorkshire Vets half marathon championships; unfortuntely the results were not available so results could not be given on the day.

All in all, a very good race. Excellent PB potential, well organised and excellent value at £20 including refreshments, a medal and a quality technical t-shirt. Certainly as race to consider in future Road Championships.

Well done all!
