Woodbank Stadium, Stockport - 7 December 2014

The penultimate race in the 2014 Road Championship, the PUMA Stockport 10 took place on Sunday.

This year the field was increased from 1,250 to 1,500 and incorporated the North Of England 10 miles Championships.  For as long as I remember, and again for 2014 this popular race was a sellout, attracting many a fine athlete including two of our own in Lucy Verrill and John Field.

Lucy heads into the final 350m

On arriving at Woodbank Park the weather was reasonably calm and dry, becoming more unsettled as the morning passed.  British actor Tony Audenshaw aka Tom Potson didn’t disappoint, raising the spirits with his notable and unique race day commentary!

As the start time approached the weather worsened making conditions horribly cold, wet and windy.  Stockport Harriers’ cross country international Steve Vernon picked up the mic, providing words of encouragement before starting the race just after 10am.  Athletes covered the first 350m on the track to the Benny Hill theme tune playing out over the PA before leaving the track and heading out through the park onto the open road.

Lucy, on her first race back after a period of absence finished as 19th female in 1:08:57. For John, he ran a comfortable race and was happy to finish in 1:20:17.

Mission accomplished!

The winner was Andrew Davies from the hosts club, Stockport Harriers in 50:25, closely followed by club mate Jack Morris in 50:32. Many a favourite, Blackburn’s Ben fish was 3rd and Leed’s Alan Buckley 4th.  1st female was Ali Lavender from Oswestry in 58:13.

The PUMA Stockport 10 mile proved again to be a well organised, well marshalled and fun event.  Remembering what makes these outings all the more special, for the second year we retreated to the Boat & Horses Pub in Chadderton with Edwards (1:15:11) and Craddock (1:23:58), friends and family for the finest of carveries and a pint or two of Plumb Pudding!  Same again next year?!
