National Road Relays

Holmfirth Harriers sent a men’s and women’s team to the National road relays at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield on Saturday 5th April

Having been run over the same course since 1972, this year it was shortened due to ‘Health & Safety’ concerns over a short, unmade section of the course. This disgruntled many athletes as they were unable to compare their times to previous years. However, the show must go on and the men set off on time at 12.00. Their course is six alternate long and short legs of 5.08 miles and 2.69 miles. Student Peter Brookes was on leg one. Having been running extremely well of late, but up against top class opposition, he brought the team back in 37th place. Dave Turnbull, running the London Marathon this weekend, opted for a short leg and hung on to 37th place. Richard Smith, due to run leg five, was promoted to three due to the late arrival of several athletes affected by traffic problems. Despite having his warm up curtailed he ran well and moved up to 34th. Scott Smith, having practically jumped from his car to the start, line ran a gritty leg but dropped to 39th. Dave Watson on long leg five had a stormer pulling up to 32nd. Stuart Sharpe, also doing London, moved the team up further to 28th. Unfortunately this was the high point. Student Craig Boggon slipped to 31st. Chris  Beadle 33rd. Max Kaye, suffering from a cold, toughed it out, 33rd. Youngster Robert Hinchliffe- Smith, running for the first time at this level, kept a calm head only dropping one place, 34th. Philip Hewitt hung on to 34th on the last long leg.  Captain and the ‘old man’ of the team John Ewart brought the club home, somehow managing to hold on to 34th place.

The ladies set off at 12.20. Their race is run over six short legs of 2.69 miles. The original team running order was disrupted due to the late arrival of some runners. This left Lesley Ewart, at 59, having to run the first leg. Surrounded by young athletes in their late teens and early twenties she didn’t disgrace herself, running well after a four month layoff to bring the team back in 50th position. Helen Fines hauled the team back up to 40th on leg two, followed by Julia Johnson, 41st Helen Pettit, 38th, Claire Leaver 33rd and Emma Serjeant finishing the team in 35th place.

Aldershot Farnham and District retained their title from 2013.

It’s always difficult getting athletes out for relays at this time of year with the various marathons being run around the same time. The team Captains would like to thank the athletes who made the effort to travel and run.
