Huddersfield RR 10K

23 February 2014

This was the second race in the 2014 Road Championships and with Snake Lane 10 and the Great North West Half Marathon happening on the same day and attracting many of our athletes, only 12 Harriers made it to the start line.

The presence of Mountain Rescue raised some nervousness among the first timers – it was hilly but perhaps not that hilly!

The start line was buffeted by a strong wind which persisted around the whole course and always seemingly in your face. As with runners at the Snake Lane 10 this certainly impacted on the times but not the spirit. The run through Netherton at the top of the hill #1 was particular memorable with awesome support from the locals and an opportunity for hurdling over the road works… another memorable moment was the ridiculously steep section near the end down past the North Light Gallery, so steep it ‘burned’ the soles of your feet.

Holmfirth Harriers ran well getting second place men’s team, yours truly knocked five minutes off his time from last year proving that all those hill reps in training have been worth it.

As always a fantastically well organised, chip timed event.

The race was won by Simon Cook in 35:54 and the first female, Sarah Glyde from Todmorden Harriers finished in 43:52.

For Holmfirth it was Jonny McLean who took home maximum points in the road champs finishing 6th in 37:50; followed by Chris Beadle in 14th and 3rd M40(39:59) and David Roberts 27th (42:11); performances rewarding the men with 2nd team prize.  John Levick was 3rd M50 in 42:34.

Helen Pettit was first home for the Holmfirth ladies finishing as 1st F45 in 47:11.

Well done to all who took part and represented the club.
