The day had arrived... a big day for me as the 2012 race was my first ever race - back then I managed to come 147th out of 785 in 43:37 and really enjoyed it.

This year I pre-entered the race, a bargain at £10 and very efficient it was; I was sent my race number combined with running chip well in advance of race day.

I arrived at the start an hour before the start at 9am allowing plenty of time to park which was just a short distance away from the start/finish.

The race starts in Royston Park about 200 metres from the road and with a mass start I felt it a good idea to get up near the front.  After leaving the park you run out of the centre of Royston and onto the country A roads; for the first four miles it was long, straight and flat roads with maybe three left hand turns. The first hill was about 4.5 miles into the race - a steady hill of about 400m then back onto the flat and down to the final short/steep hill about 600 metres from the finish. I remember the hill from the previous year, it was tough and I was glad to see the finish line at the top!

I was hoping for a sub 40 minute 10K but having not run for seven days before with back pain I couldn't see it. I ran well and stayed on target for most of the race but lost a vital 30+ seconds somewhere on the way... I finished in 40.36 and 64th out of 619; a good turnout given there were so many races on the same day.

I collected my technical t-shirt, had a brew and supported the rest of the finishers including few amber vests over the finish line.

Individual results for the Holmfirth contingent were Jonathan King 40:36 [64]; Sharon Docherty 57:11 [464]; Craig Docherty 57:11 [465]; Katherine Mcfadzean 57:47 [467] and Angela Smith 1:06:16 [586].

Race winners were Carl Ryde of Doncaster AC in 33:01 and first female Fiona Davies of Kingston Runners in 38:19.

This was an a great and enjoyable race; well run with friendly marshals.  I am certain to be be back next year!
