English National Road Relays - Sutton Park – 12th October 2013

Category: Road Published Date Hits: 1994

Holmfirth Harriers sent a men’s and women’s team to the National road relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham on Saturday 12th October. Run over six legs of 5.8k for men and four legs of 4.3k for women, it is one of the highlights of the road racing calendar.

Neither team was at full strength due to the usual list of injuries, illnesses and other commitments. However all the athletes who did turn out gave maximum effort, which is always appreciated by the team Captains and fellow team members alike.

Dave TurnbullFor the men, Dave Turnbull, who had just completed a 100 mile week of marathon training, set off on the first leg. Up against some of the country’s best runners Dave gave everything and came back in 52nd place (18:38). Student Peter Brookes took over on the next leg, having a good run but dropping four places to 56th (19:11).

Richard Anderson, having travelled down from Carlisle in the morning was up next. Working his way back to full fitness having had his usual training disrupted by starting a new job, Richard displayed his usual grittiness only dropping two places to 58th (19:32).

Fireman Scott Smith was up next. Just having done a night shift, and going back after the race to do another one, Scott was understandably a little tired. He didn’t let it show though as he blasted round the course finishing 61st (20:48).

Leg five had Dr. Simon Findlay displaying his talents. More used to running shorter distances on the track he nevertheless did himself proud, but down to 63rd (21:29).

Philip Hewitt, a last minute substitute for one of the ill, took over on the last leg. He ran true to form finally bringing the team home in 64th place (21:42) and a total time of 2.01.20.

The race was won by Sale Harriers in 1.45.56, with Ryan McLeod of Tipton clocking the fastest time of the day in 16:55

Claire Leaver Northern RRs 2013The ladies, unlike the men, do not have to qualify for this national Championship race. Holmfirth turned out a loyal team of ladies, which included Track & Field Secretary Adrienne Dewhirst.

Claire Leaver, who is very familiar with this course, bravely took on the fast start of leg one amongst tough international athletes and finished in 56th (16:56).

Kirsty Henderson had a good run on leg 2, dropping 7 places to 63rd (19:03). Emma Serjeant made a superb effort to pick up 6 places to take the team back to 57th in a time of 20:07.

Adrienne Dewhirst, more familiar with supporting Holmfirth’s athletes on this course, demonstrated her commitment by completing the team on the anchor leg in 64th (24:21) with an overall time of 1:20:27.

The ladies race was dominated by Aldershot, Farnham & District, who not only won the title (56:42),but finished two other teams in the top seven!  Aldershot couldn’t quite claim the fastest leg though, which went to Gemma Steel of Charnwood in 13:49.
