Askern 10 Mile, 11 August 2013

Race 11/15 of the 2013 Road Championship series of races took us east towards Doncaster to the town of Askern.  The race was very well organised with plenty of parking, water stations, supporting marshals and a great t-shirt at the end!

The course is fairly rural and undulating with a ‘good’ hill at approximately 4 miles (I forgot about this and apologise for suggesting there were no hills to talk of!).

Askern 10 - 2013

Finished - Claire Whitwam, Helen Pettit, Matthew Rose
and Yvette Arthur

The race was due to start at 10:30 but with a 12mph convoy holding up traffic along the M62/A19 it was delayed for 15 minutes; not ideal but unavoidable. Race conditions were not perfect with gusts of wind making it that little bit more difficult but it didn’t stop our hardy athletes from putting in some great performances.  There were a number of personal and course ‘bests’ and Helen Pettit (2nd F45) and Yvette Arthur (3rd F50) were rewarded with age group category prizes.

In total there were 333 finishers, 10 from Holmfirth; results were as follows: 44th David Roberts [65:07], 69th Brandon Holroyd [67:49], 74th Garreth Humpries: [68:13], 114th Matthew Rose [72:46], 144th Helen Pettit [75:41], 147th David Bowden [75:59], 169th Nicola Brown [78:06], 195th Yvette Arthur [81:10], 218th Claire Whitwam [84:38], 329th Hilary Booth [108:45].

The winner was Ben Livesey of Birchfield Harriers in 52:08; first female was Kate Parry from Leeds City in 61:03.

The next Road Championship race is a short race in the Netherthong 10K on 29 September.  In advance of that for anybody who can make it we have the Yorkshire Road Relays at Don Valley on 31 August 2013 (prospectus).
