Club 10

Club 10 - 16th July 2013

Matthew Rose and Club Captain John Ewart

Club 10 winner Matthew Rose and capt. John Ewart

In a month likely to become the driest since records began in 1766 and level three heat warnings in place across the UK it wasn't surprising to see an impact on the turnout for this, the final road race of the Summer Championships. Of the 36 athletes who had pre-entered, 20 turned out and we had a further 7 entries on the night placing 27 on the start line.

To those who aren't familiar with the course, the Club 10 is an undulating course starting just beyond the Rock pub with a small loop (Honley lights, Hagg Wood, Smithy Place) and then a large loop from Honley to Holmfirth Centre to the High School and then a fast 3.5 miles through New Mill and towards Honley finishing just beyond Gynn Lane

At 7pm with humid weather and temperatures still at 22.7C it was going to be a demanding race and after a quick race briefing from Club Captain John Ewart the countdown began and the signal to go was given.

Jonny McLean who is currently in very fine form took an early lead closely followed by Craig Boggon who had raced the Holme Moss Fell Race only two days earlier; Jonny held onto the lead to be first home on the night and fastest male in 1:03:27. Craig followed 26 seconds later to come second in 1:03:53 - 3rd for the men was Road Champ leader David Roberts in 1:06:57.

The fastest lady on the night was Kath Farquhar in 1:12:06. Helen Standing had a great race to come in 13 seconds later in 1:12:19; third lady on the night was Helen Pettit posting a finish time of 1:17:15.

The handicap winner on the night was Matthew Rose; Matthew had a solid race amongst a heavy schedule of marathon training and had a strong second half to finish in 1:14:44.

Many thanks to all officials, marshalls and helpers for all your hard work ensuring the race ran smoothly; thanks also to all who turned out - it was great to see new faces and a good range of abilities taking part.
