Helen Windsor 10K

Helen Windsor 10K, 3 July 2013

As we neared the All Rounders Sports Club in Greetland you could have imagined this was going to be one tricky number; lovely panoramic views was our reward as we reached the sports club grounds, parked the car and then headed down to the club house to be greeted by a select handful of Holmfirth Harriers.

A selection of Harriers after the Helen Windsor 10K

The club house although a little tired was certainly adequate; decent facilities, tea, coffee, sandwiches and a bar - certainly something to look forward to afterwards! Outside was a dirt track which led to two rugby pitches, ideal for a few laps of warmup and stretches before we regrouped for a briefing and to be escorted a couple of hundred metres down the road to the start line.

It was a very casual walk and a final opportunity to wish each other luck before a comical siren was sounded - was that it? Yes, and the race had started.

This was race number nine of the 2013 Road Championships and with a small field of six men and six ladies it was a perfect opportunity for some well deserved 'big' championship points! With the weather almost perfect and a course reputed as having hills as big as the points on offer we were going to have fun earning them!

The route was akin to the Joe Percy 10K, rural, undulating and quiet moorland roads (around Greetland), consisting of one small and one large loop. I can only speak from my experience, it was very well balanced with flat and down to reward the ups and all very runnable. I recognised a number of Halifax Harriers and went with a strategy to hang on to them for a few miles before the pace slowed and I chose to go it alone... I kept picking off each runner one by one and never looked back; I can't recall losing one place - testimony to the quality training offered by the club!

Scott Smith had another great run to come in 3rd in 36:47. Leading the Road Champs for the men and dipping under the 40 minute mark for the second time was David Roberts 19th in 39:59; next up was GB Triathlete Garreth Humphries having swam 2.5K and cycled 120K earlier in the day was 33rd in 42:07!

Helen Standing wasn't feeling the magic tonight but still put in a brilliant performance to finish 4th lady and 1st F35 in 44:06. Matthew Rose now into his Marathon training ran a very satisfying 45:06 followed closely by Nicola Brown back from injury and 3rd F40 in 46:54.

Jeff Pierson had a great run to finish 3rd M60 in 47:37 (74/3 M60) just pipping Neil Harrison (banging in the miles ahead of his first Olympic Distance Triathlon) by four seconds in 47:41. Ellie Smith had a fantastic run, achieving a course PB by almost nine minutes and a 10K PB by three in 51:07. Jeanette Pierson ran solidly and was 1st F55 in 52:05 just in front of Rowan Eastwood, feeling the benefits of Strength and Conditioning and Phil Hanson's speed session and sailing over the line in 54:40. Hilary Booth cycled to the start, arriving slightly late and having to play catchup stormed round in 1:02:47.

The momento was genius, a bottle of Real Ale!

Photos, refreshments, results and farewells followed.   A well organised, enjoyable road race and another great club outing!

Well done everybody!
