Sheffield Half Marathon 2013

This race was the first long run in the Road Championship series and whilst not a huge turnout, it was great to have 12 athletes head over the Yorkshire border to compete in one of the biggest participation events in Sheffield's racing calendar. Described by many as having great PB potential, the route was the same as previous years with the start and finish at magnificent Don Valley Stadium and following a runner and spectator-friendly route through the city centre, up Eccleshall Road and back for a grandstand finish.

On a pleasant morning with only a little breeze to complain about, it was David Roberts who was first home for Holmfirth finishing in 1:26:42. Brandon Holroyd was next finishing in 1.33.05, just three seconds ahead of recent London Marathon finisher John Robinson in 1:33:08. Rich McLeod was vey happy with his run setting a season's best and finishing in 1.35.45. Nicola Brown was first lady home for Holmfirth finishing in 1:36:05 and 7th F40.

After a few months going backwards, Matthew Rose was delighted with his run. Matthew ran a sensible first half which led to a negative split (faster second half than first) by over three minutes and a four minute improvement on last year; Matthew finished in 1:37:14. Helen Pettit was running her first ever half marathon distance and ran brilliantly to finish 5th F45 in 1:38:57. Next up was Rosemary Baker who was our only prize winner of the day; Rosemary finished 2nd F50 in 1:43:05.

The ever improving Mark Owen pulled a muscle half way through the race but was still very happy with his sub 2 hour performance finishing in 1:54:01. Sarah Ross was next in 2:00:24 followed by Jane Stirling 2:08:57 and finally seasoned athlete Hilary Booth in 2:20:55.

The race was won by Blackburn Harrier Ben Fish in 1:06:51; first lady was Wakefield Harrier, Julie Briscoe in 1:16:15.
