Simon Edwards reports,

6.1It was fantastic to see so many new faces and a range of abilities in the 39 athletes (one of the highest turnouts in the last 30 years !!!), who took on this years annual Club 6 road race up at Farnley Tyas on Sunday 17th March. With temperatures just above freezing this did not deter our runners, followers and volunteers putting on a memorable event.

Leading off the race was debutant Natalie Allen (SCR) and reluctant racer Leanne Field (+1min) both ran really well and kept the rest of the field at bay after the first loop (4 miles), encouraged by a healthy gathering of supporters both maintained a good rhythm to finish in 6th and 8th respectively.

The handicap winner this year was also a lady running on debut, Kirsty Henderson (+10mins) who ran fantastically on the first loop and was within 2 mins of the front runners, this form was maintained over the final 2 miles and Kirsty was a comfortable winner by 37 seconds in 1st place with a race time of 54.47. Other performances of note by some of our ladies, Emma Sergeant (+10Min) following up her great cross country season in 5th, Diane Lee was 9th, Clare Whitwam in 18th and another debutant in Ellie Smith (+5min) having a great start to the year with a brilliant 57:49 to finish 20th on handicap.

6 2Our seasoned team runners as always turned out in numbers many on the back of races the day before and it’s a credit they continue to put into the club and support our events. 1st home with the fastest time of the day was Richard Anderson in 32:10 who continues to get stronger and stronger and is looking good for a great summer season. Katie Walshaw stormed home in 3rd with 35:28, Katies progress documented in the fact this time was almost 3mins quicker than her last run here in 2009. Ladies captain Helen Berry ran solidly in 38:28 and Kath Farquhar was the last of the quartet in 39.31

Not to be outdone by the ladies the Harrier men also produced on the day. Runner up in the handicap was Richard Smith Snr (+6mins) in a time of 55:24. Performance of the day in the handicap placing 3rd was Fell and Cross Country legend Chris Beadle (+17mins) who made mince meat of the handicap and also picked runners off at will in the final stages up Moor lane, including Michael Coggon (+8mins) who must have been delighted to come home in 4th – a great run. Elsewhere, Peter Brookes again is showing great promise and ran well to finish in 2nd  on the clock with a time of 34.02. Scott Smith continuing his great winter season 4th 36:08, Stefan Fields 7th in 39.21 and John Robinson taking time out from his London Marathon training to clock 40.42 in 9th on time.

6 3Final reflections must include Mark Owen (+8min) for his 7th place finish in the handicap behind Natalie, this shows that he has potential to run more races in the future and develop. Last but no means least a shrinking Sean Doyle (+13min), proving pain is weakness leaving the body and miles are nothing but a number. Sean taking a day out from training for the Blackpool Marathon on 7th April and rounding off the top 10 on handicap, Well done fella.

Thank you to all the marshalls and volunteers for whom which without their time and assistance the event could not have taken place.

The Club 5 is the next club road race in May and it would be great to see more faces and successes to report about.
