Norton 9 Mile – 3rd March 2013

Norton 9 Mile – 3 March 2013

Natalie Allan reports…

Norton 9A dry, cool and windless morning provided the perfect running conditions for the first 'medium' race of the 2013 Road Championships.

An earlyish start (not as early as Meltham!) saw Matthew Rose, Mark Owen and I heading East to the village of Norton, Doncaster for a 9 miler.

We weren't sure how many other Harriers were going to be racing and it was a lovely sight to see a good number of our buddies from Holmfirth parking up with the 500+ runners taking part on the day. The facilities were adequate at Norton Primary School, although I always feel like a giant using school mini-toilets and sinks!

After checking out the map (with skull and cross bones to signal the hills!) we headed up towards the start where we were able to watch the 5K fun run.  It was a lovely surprise to catch sight of Junior Sam Brown proudly sporting a Holmfirth vest as he made his way to the start line.  “Go”, the fun runners were off! Sam did brilliantly and finished 6th and 2nd Junior in 23:32!

At this point we continued our warm up and ran down to check out the finish line and hill leading up to it!

Before long it was time to line up at the start which was quite cramped being in a little village cul -de-sac! A quick intro from Paul Collingwood, Askern running club, the whistle signalling the off, and my new watch was set in the hope it would help me run faster ;0)

The atmosphere was really friendly, with supportive locals and some really great marshals. The course is predominantly flat with a couple of long, gradual hills at 4.5 and 7 miles (nothing like the ones round the Holme Valley!) and the scenery is pretty. The water stations were well placed but as most of you will know, trying to run whilst drinking from a plastic cup is pretty impossible!

As I headed into the last mile I was trying my hardest to catch fellow Harrier Jane Stirling, but her stamina and sprint finish was stronger than mine! 9 miles in the bag, no walking and I beat my target by almost 5 minutes; I'll take that - my time was 1:25:11 J  I'm sure the picnic, beers and curry on the evening far outweighed the 1000ish calories burnt but I felt I'd earned it.

We exchanged stories at the finish and generally everybody was happy with their performance – what a great end to a great race.

A 9 miler is a great next step on from the 10ks and makes me confident I can work back up to the half marathons I've enjoyed in the past. All in all a well organised, friendly race which I would definitely return to next year.
