Huddersfield 10K Race Report

By Jane Stirling

The 2013 Huddersfield 10K was a huge success this year with a record 515 runners taking part in this popular local race.

ScottParking at the Rugby club was again a bit of an issue and there were some inexperienced runners on the start line initially facing the wrong way but that was quickly resolved allowing the race to start on this challenging course!

For those who haven’t attempted this course yet, if you’re not running up you’ll be running down.  There is a fast flat mile down the Huddersfield Road to look forwards to at the end – a worthy reward having hauled yourself up the final hill!    On a cold, grey but dry day – the weather at least was on our side and at 11am we were off.

This was the second race in the 2013 Road championships and the amber vests were out in force with 18 men and 12 women taking part; a turnout second only to Stadium Runners who had an astonishing 48 runners out!

The race was won by Mohamed Aburezeq (Altrincham) in 32:28 who beat his nearest rival by over 3 minutes setting a new course record in the process.  First male Harrier home (in 10th place) was Scott Smith in 38 minutes dead, followed by his team mate John Levick in 39:09 (13th place).  Jared Croft was third Harrier home in 40:14 (20th overall).

HelenHelen Standing battled it out at the finish against Rich McLeod, just beating him to the finish in 45:26 and making her 1st female Harrier home, 3rd F35 and 7th female overall.  Second female Harrier home was Rachael Mellor in 48:28 (2nd F45) and in third place was Yvette Arthur in 49:08 (2nd F50).

Richard McLeod’s 45:28 gave him a course PB by over 3 minutes and placed him 83rd in a great performance showing that his triathlon training is really paying off.

Due to these fantastic performances the ladies team beat Stadium Runners and Meltham AC to first prize in the team race and the men’s team were just piped at the post by Stadium Runners, but placed second ahead of Wakefield Triathlon Club, so well done to all of those involved.

Several other runners placed well in the vets categories, including John Levick (2nd M45), Steve Rimmer (3rd M50), Kevin Yewlett (3rd M60) and Tim Cock (3rd M70).

Further mention must go to Simon Edwards, whose intensive London Marathon training overran slightly.  This resulted in him arriving at the start 10 minutes late.  Not to be deterred he ran anyway and he didn’t come last!

Well done to all who took part and represented the club.
