Meltham 10K - 2013

Meltham 10K - 2013

Matthew Rose reports....

Snow-Clearing-300x225It was touch and go whether the Meltham 10K would go ahead following a week of heavy snow and sub –zero temperatures.  Meltham AC members and volunteers really did go over and above and took to manually clearing the snow the day before the race before declaring the race was “Still on” on Saturday.

Heavy rain during the night cleared the course of any remaining snow but left heavy currents of water flowing across the start/finish line; the chip timing mat weighted down with road cones to avoid it floating away!

There were 232 athletes at the start and a record breaking 37 from Holmfirth AC; a fantastic start to this year’s Road Championship and this being the first race.  As the hooter sounded each runner took their turn to step into the cold flowing waters and we were off.

The conditions were good on the lower ground but from mile two, on higher ground, athletes were running head on into strong headwinds with very little opportunity for shelter.   It was an eventful race for Vikki Hart who had medical attention from the Mountain Rescue team after pulling her calf; thankfully Vikki recovered sufficiently to finish the race.

184652 10200362164000648 673517016 nSimon Edwards, currently training for a marathon had a super race… after a steady start up Harrison Lane, Simon shot past (me) and maintained a good pace to finish well amongst other Harriers typically well out of Simon’s reach.

Natalie Allan and Rowan Eastwood ran similar races and Natalie had the edge as they headed towards the finish line; a last minute surge from Rowan changed that overtaking Natalie in the last few strides – a great finish and an extra point towards the Road Champs!

There were many great performances from Holmfirth and many category wins including 5th Overall for Craig Boggon 1st M50 (Steve Rimmer), 4th Lady (Jacqui Khoueiry), 1st MV60 (Kevin Yewlett), 1st F45 (Helen Pettit), 2nd F45 (Rachael Mellor ), 3rd F50 (Yvette Arthur), 2nd MV65 (Bill Hunter); Holmfirth also won the team prizes for both the men (Craig Boggon, Jonny McLean, James Durrans) and the ladies (Jacqui Khoueiry,Nicola Brown, Helen Pettitt).

The race was won by Martin Sanders or Rothwell Harriers in 36:02; first lady was from the hosts, Meltham AC Penny Ditchfield in 42:34.

I’d like to thank you all for turning out and doing your best; what brilliant results and such a high turnout.

Who’s up for the next race in the Road Champs – the Huddersfield Road Runners 10K on 24 February 2013?
